Bender, 64, was killed Monday, Nov. 26, in a traffic accident in Gaithersburg, Md. Bender was born April 3, 1943, at Eureka to Al and Frieda (Heiser) Bender. He was an outstanding athlete in basketball, football and baseball at Eureka. He graduated as the salutatorian of his class at Eureka High School in 1961. He graduated from Augustana College in 1965 and attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He worked as a sportswriter at the Waterloo, Iowa, Daily Courier from 1966-1969. He joined the Rapid City Journal in 1969. He retired May 31, 2007, after 38 years at the Journal where he worked as a reporter, assistant wire editor, night city editor, city editor, local news editor and editorial page editor. During his time at the Journal he met Muriel Shepard and they were married in 1985. He won numerous awards for his writing at the Journal. He was an avid racquetball player at the Rapid City YMCA and helped lead the drive to build the first racquetball courts at the Y. As a player, he won numerous trophies. He is survived by wife of 22 years, Muriel Shepard of Rapid City; his brother, Stanley (Monir) Bender of Gaithersburg; his daughter, Stephanie (Cliff) Westbrook of Burleson, Texas, and their children Nick, Ben and twins Matthew and Abigail; his son, Matt (Wendy) Bender of Rapid City and their daughter Chloe; a stepdaughter, Amanda (Ryan) Hirscht of Portland, Ore., and their son, Tiani; a stepson, Tom (Lupe) Shepard and their children Roger and Ana; his former wife, Teri (Gordon) Parlet of Rapid City; Muriel's other family members and his many friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Frieda Bender; a sister, Sylvia; his father-in-law, Bob Madsen of Carpenter; his sister-in-law, Betty Bender of Gaithersburg; his Journal friend and boss Peggy Sagen; and assorted pets, most recently Cecil, Mellow and Poocher the Rat Dog. The family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Rapid City YMCA in Ron Bender's name.
