McDonald, 43, whose untimely death occurred in a Sioux City hospital last Thursday. Services were in charge of Dr. J.S. Hoagland, of Mitchell, superintendent of the Mitchell-Sioux Falls district of the Dakota M.E. Conference. The funeral address was given by Dr. J.P. Jenkins, of Mitchell, and words of appreciation were offered by Rev. W.C. Deer, of Vermillion. Dr. G.T. Notson, superintendent of the Sioux City Methodist hospital, spoke the memorial service, Musical selections were provided by the Methodist choir with Dr. G.W. Collins directing, of which Mrs. McDonald had been a member. The Olds funeral home directed interment in Bluff View cemetery. Among the out-of-town ministers attending the funeral were Rev. H.O. Blackburn, of Beresford; Rev. E.E.Vernon, of Canistota; Rev. J.O.Benson; of Gayville; Rev. H.H.Arms, of Irene and Wakonda; Rev. R.M. Powers, of Plankinton; Rev. W.E.Hartung, of Salem; Rev. W.P. Slocum, of Sioux Falls; Rev. Alfred Carlyon, of Springfield; Rev. Ralph Shearer, of Tyndall; Rev. J.H. Kearton, of Yankton; Rev. N.P. Johnson, of Sioux City, and Dr. C.J. Seamans, of Mitchell. Mrs. E.A. Roadman, wife of Dakota Wesleyan University, also was present. Fifteen ministers' wives also attended. Death Expected Mrs. McDonald's death was a distinct shock to the community although it was understood a number of hours before she passed away that death was imminent. Death was not unanticipated by Mrs. McDonald, who called her family to her bedside Thursday and talked with them concerning private matters. The local woman's death was caused almost directly by appendicitis. Last Saturday she was taken ill and at first she believed she was suffering from an indigestion attack. Sunday morning, she condition was unimproved; a physician was called and her attack was diagnosed as appendicitis. She was taken to the Methodist hospital, Sioux City, where an operation was performed. It was found the appendix had bursted and that peritonitis had set in. At first there seemed to be some hope for her recovery but in the next few days her condition took on a hopeless aspect. Mrs. McDonald was born Feb. 3, 1890, near Wakonda, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Mayer. She had two brothers, Louis F. Mayer, of Wakonda, and Samuel E. Mayer, now deceased, and three sisters, Lydia Louise , now dead, Mrs. Ella Ketchum, of Vermillion, and Mrs. Carrie Witt, of Macksburg, Ia. She was educated in the public schools of the Wakonda community. Growing up in a Christian home, she early became a member of the Methodist church Wakonda. She was the organist of this church at the time of her marriage. Loses Kin In 1891 when Mrs. McDonald, then Rose Agnes Mayer, was less than two years of age, death claimed her mother, and the two older sisters took charge of the home. During an influenza epidemic, her oldest sister, Lydia, her brother, Samuel, and her father, all succumbed within one week. As Mrs. McDonald was ill with the same malady then, they were buried without her seeing them. It was at her farm home near Wakonda, April 18, 1917, that Rose Agnes Mayer was married to Rev. Lorne A. McDonald. She was a mother to three children: Florin I McDonald who was nine when she came into the home; Fay Howard McDonald and Charles Wesley McDonald. Mrs. McDonald came here in 1930 with her husband from Flandreau, where he was in charge of the Methodist church for two years. As Rev. McDonald has had the local Methodist pastorate a dozen years, an unequaled record in the state's Methodist church circles, Mrs. McDonald was happy to share this honor as his wife. During her residence here the new $90,000 Methodist church and Wesley foundation was constructed in Vermillion. Surviving relatives, all of whom attended the funeral, are the husband and the three boys; her sisters, Mrs. Witt and Mrs. Kethum; her brother, Louis Mayer, and their families; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.D. Pinnel and family, of Pierre, and Mrs. Edna McDonald and family, of Madison. Minister's Tribute In tribute to Mrs. McDonald we repeat a few of Rev. Deer's words said at the services: "Mrs. McDonald had two dominant interests - her home and her church. In her well-ordered home, she gave unstinted devotion to the welfare of her family. As a mother she was untiring in her efforts for the children's mental, physical and spiritual development. As a wife she was....." (continued on page 4)
