FREY and wife on west Fifth street when a houseful of his relatives gathered from nearby points and aided in the celebration of the eightieth birthday anniversary of this popular pioneer citizen. The affair was a complete surprise to both Mr. FREY and his wife, as the children (who were responsible for the affair) had each previously mailed birthday cards to their father, who, upon receipt of these, had no thought of seeing them in person. The aged couple had barely finished breakfast when their visitors began to arrive, and soon the house was filled by a jolly throng, each vieing with the other to make the day most enjoyable to the victim of the surprise. The children who , with their families, were present were Fred W. FREY and Julius A. FREY of Middleburg; Mrs. John OBERLY, Humboldt; Mrs. J.G. STALDER and Mrs. Frank ALBIN, both of Salem; and Mrs. Julia A. VANIER of Dubois. Only two of the children - John J. FREY of Wichita, Kas. And Mrs. Eliza KAUL of Mitchell - were unable to be there. Three of the married grandchildren, Mesdames Will PORR and Burton WEBSTER - were also in attendance together with their families. The day was spent in feasting and making merry, in which none joined more heartily than the one in whose honor the gathering was held. Mr. FREY was presented with a large group portrait, of which the likeness of himself and wife formed the center, with the eight living children arranged in a circle about the card. All were late photos, and how the perpetrators of the surprise managed to secure a late photo of the pair without their knowledge was at first a puzzler to Mr. FREY. Then he happened to think that a short time ago Mr. THORNTON, the photographer, had persuaded him to come, along with his wife, to the studio, and have made a photo to add to a collection of pictures of aged persons of the community, and it dawned upon him, that he had been "worked," but he did not get angry. Instead he accepted the gift readily and thankfully, and it will long adorn the home as a memento of a very happy event. Inasmuch as it is not a common thing for our people to attain the age of four score years - especially with the excellent health which has fallen to the lot of Mr. FREY - we are taking the liberty of publishing a few facts concerning the life and career of this esteemed friend. A native of Berne, Switzerland, he emigrated to this country at the age of twenty years, and began work on a farm in Ohio, where he remained a few years and was married. In 1855 he came west, finally locating in Richardson county, Nebraska, and taking a homestead, which he has improved and still retains, near Middleburg. He lived thereon with his family until seven years ago, when he retired from farm life, turned the place over to his sons and moved into Humboldt to spend his declining years in a less strenuous existence. Both he and his wife, who is but three years his junior, enjoy the best of health and are among our most highly respected citizens. They are the parents of the eight grown children above mentioned, and also two which died in infancy. In addition they boast of forty-four grand children and eleven great grandchildren, which is a record hard to equal. Something of the change which came over Mr. FREY's dreams as a young man, carving out a home for himself in a foreign land, may be understood by his remark that "For the first two months on American soil I lay awake nights figuring on how long I would be compelled to wok to earn sufficient money to return to the fatherland to live. After that, I gave my time to estimate how long it would take me to accumulate enough to pay my way to Switzerland - on a visit. Twenty-five years ago, when I did visit my native land, after a few days spent about my old haunts, I soon became homesick for the land of my adoption and would not think of living any other place than America." The Leader congratulates both Mr. And Mrs. FREY on the possession of such a large, interesting and worthy family of descendants, also on having attained their advanced age without a decline in health or spirits, and we speak for a multitude of friends in expressing the hope that both may be spared to celebrate very many more happy birthdays. Humboldt paper Jan 1917 FATHER AND MOTHER FREY Both Called To Eternal Rest Within Less Than A Week Since our last issue death has claimed both Mr. and Mrs. Jacob FREY, the latter passing away Friday Morning and Mr. FREY was stricken with a partial stroke of paralysis on Saturday, being unable to attend the funeral of his faithful wife on Sunday. He failed rapidly and his only desire seemed to be to join his life's companion on the other side of the Great Divide, where parting and sorrow come no more. Mrs. Rosine FREY was born October 19, 1833 at Minzingen, Canton Bern, Switzerland, departed this life January 25th, 1917, at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 6 days. With her parents she emigrated to this country in 1851 and settled in the state of Ohio. Jacob FREY was born in Heinberg, Amtsbezirk Thun, Canton Bern, Switzerland, June 30, 1830 and came to this country when a young man and also located in Ohio, where they were united in marriage in March 1853 and lived happily together for nearly 64 years. This union was blessed with eleven children of whom eight, three sons and five daughters, survive them. In 1854 this young couple came to St. Joseph, Missouri, where Mrs. FREY remained with relatives while Mr. FREY came to Nebraska to take up a homestead about eleven miles south of Humboldt on which they settled a few months later in 1855 and together went thru the many hardships of pioneer life. Twelve years ago they came to our city to spend their declining years. Mother FREY was brought up in the faith of the German-Reformed church of which she was a member until they came here and not finding a church of that denomination they united with the German M.E. Church. Mrs. FREY had been failing for some time and in her weakened condition was not able to resist an attack of La Grippe. She had no desire to recover but had a longing for eternal rest, and passed away peacefully. We trust she is safe in the arms of Jesus. Mr. FREY was one of nature's noblemen and was always ready to help in a substantial way worthy neighbors who braved with him the hardships of pioneer life. He served as justice of the peace for a number of years and had many amusing incidents to relate as to the marriages he was called upon to perform in that capacity. Neighbors who knew them for half a century had nothing but words of praise for this worthy couple. They leave to mourn their loss eight children, five sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, forty-five grandchildren, twenty-seven great grand children. The living children are Mrs. Lena OBERLY, Humboldt, Neb., Luiza B. STALDER, Morrill, Kan., John J. FREY, Derby, Kan., Ida ALBIN, Sabetha, Kan., Eliza M. KAUL, Barnard, Kan., Fred E. FREY, Du Bois, Neb., Julius FREY, Du Bois, Neb., Julia A. VANIER, Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. FREY was laid to rest Sunday afternoon in the Humboldt cemetery and Mr. FREY will be laid by her side today, Rev. KRACHER, of the German M.E. church conducting both services.
