Description	:	Johann Roth was born 19 March 1836 in Munsingen, Bern, Switzerland and baptized 3 April 1936. He came with his parents, Benedict & Katherine Gfeller Roth, and siblings to America on the ship Severn when he was 10 years old. The ship arrived in New York City on 28 June 1848. His brother, James Savane Roth, was born on the the ship just a few days before its arrival. The family traveled to Tuscarawas Co., OH, where his father Benedict died less than a year later. He came with his parents, Benedict & Katherine Gfeller Roth, and siblings to America on the ship Severn when he was 10 years old. The ship arrived in New York City on 28 June 1848. His brother, James Savane Roth, was born on the the ship just a few days before its arrival. The family traveled to Tuscarawas Co., OH, where his father Benedict died less than a year later. John's mother Katherine remarried to Benedict Nickles, and moved to Moniteau Co., Missouri in 1866, but John stayed in Ohio. John Roth served throughout the Civil War and was captured as a prisoner of war of the Confederates. He lived most of his life in Shanesville, OH, which is now part of Sugarcreek. He was a member of the American Legion and the K of P Lodge. He married about 1879 to Caroline Froelich, daughter of George Froelich. They had one daughter and one adopted or foster daughter.
