Auditor, Dies in Colorado Roy Johnson, well known in Dayton, Passes Away After Lingering Illness Roy Johnson, former Dayton boy and County Auditor for a number of years, died Sunday morning at the Lutheran sanitarium, Wheat Ridge, Colorado, after a lingering illness. Roy was born on a farm south of town, then living with his parents in the west part of town he attended the Dayton schools. He will be remembered by those of us who attended school with him, for his continual friendly disposition and his keen wit. He has three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Stevens of Algona, Mrs. Joe Crandall, of Lake City, and Mrs. Ernest Larson of Dayton. He also leaves his wife in Fort Dodge and many other relatives and a host of friends. Roy was a resident of Fort Dodge for many years, during which time he served as County Auditor. He was employed by the Consumers Oil Refinery Co. at Newcastle, Wyoming, when he became ill. Dayton Review March 23, 1944 Obituary Roy Merrill Johnson, son of Mrs. Clarence Johnson, passed to the Haven of Rest in Denver, Colo., March 5, 1944. Born on a farm south of Dayton April 25, 1899, then moving into town with his parents he attended the Dayton school, graduating with the class of 1917 with credit. He was united in marriage June 21, 1928 to Miss Nellie Houck of Fort Dodge. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Fort Dodge and the Masonic Lodge of Dayton and was Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Fort Dodge. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, two sisters and twin brothers. Roy was in the County Auditor's Office for thirteen years. In 1932 he accepted an executive position of the Farm Loan division of the E. H. Lougee Inc. Investment Bank in Council Bluffs. There he handled farm loans for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in 28 Iowa counties. Three years ago they moved to Newcastle, Wyoming where he was accountant for the Consumers' Oil Refinery Co. He went to Denver, Colo., several months ago to receive special medical care. He is survived by his widow, the former Nellie Houck of Fort Dodge, and three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Stephens of Algona, Mrs. Joel Crandall of Lake City, and Mrs. E. R. Larson of Dayton. He is also mourned by seven nieces and eight nephews and a large number of other relatives and friends. Roy was a man of wonderful courage, always ready to help in every need and in every cause. His wife, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. H. G. Houch, and his sister, Mrs. E. R. Larson, were at his bedside when he passed away. Funeral services were conducted at the Wilder Funeral Home and the Methodist church at Fort Dodge on Thursday, March 9, Dr. J. J. Davies officiating. Pallbearers were E. T. Flaherty of Sioux City, Arnold Sandhom and Rose Leonard of Dayton, V. E. Hale, J. B. Sells and Dr. Emil Focken of Fort Dodge. During the rites Milton O. Dalvey sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "The Lord's Prayer" to Miss Leda Everson's accompaniment. The many floral tributes were arranged by Miss Helen Collins, Mrs. Gerald Sells, Mrs. Emil Bocken and Mrs. Russell Carlson. Relatives from out of town for the services were: Mrs. Hazel Stephens, Mr. and Mrs. Don Robinson, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Stephens, Ronald and Geraldine of Algona; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Trenary and Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Noll of Corwith, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Joel M. Crandall and Carl Jean of Lake City; Pvt. Richard Crandall of Camp Dodge; Mrs. Don Zakeer of Louisville, Ky.; and Major and Mrs. E. B. McConkie of Scott Field, Ill. There were Masonic rites at the Dayton cemetery where he was buried. The Wilder Funeral home was in charge.
