Description	:	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 25, 1942 Roy Doher, Nelson dairyman, was critically injured in an explosion at their home in the southeast part of town, shortly before 7 o'clock this morning. The explosion occurred when Mr. Doher attempted to light an artificial-gas water heater in the basement. Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, June 25, 1942 Roy Doher, Nelson dairyman, was critically injured in an explosion at their home in the southeast part of town, shortly before 7 o'clock this morning. The explosion occurred when Mr. Doher attempted to light an artificial-gas water heater in the basement. The system was installed only yesterday and it is presumed that the small basement and the kitchen directly above it on the east end of the house had become filled during the night hours with escaped gas from a faulty fitting. The rest of the family had not arisen, and Mr. Doher was alone in that portion of the home at the time. Mrs. Doher found her husband lying unconscious in the basement. Finding the telephone had been rendered useless by the blast, she drove into town to enlist aid. Alfred Flower returned to the home with her where they found Mr. Doher moving about the yard in a dazed condition. He was immediately placed in the care of the doctor here and removed to the hospital in Superior. His arms and face were badly lacerated and his condition is regarded as extremely serious by the attending physician. The Doher home was badly wrecked by the explosion. The entire east wall of the house was blown out about 18 inches and the kitchen sink and the floor and floor covering surrounding it scattered about the room. Doors and windows were blown to bits and windows in the far side of the house were shattered. A large section of a thick basement wall surrounding a cistern was blown out. The main south wall of the house was also damaged. ======================================================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, July 2, 1942 Roy Doher whose serious injury in a gas explosion at their home Thursday morning of last week was mentioned in The Gazette, died at the Superior hospital at three o'clock Friday morning. The funeral was held at the Methodist church here Saturday afternoon with Rev. A.J. Rich in charge. Rev. V.R. Daniels, former pastor here, now of Harvard, delivered the sermon. The singers were: Alex Cochran (Ord), Jas. F. Murphy, H.O. Strombom, B.T. Christensen. Mr. Cochran sang: "Our Day Is Done" and "My Jesus As Thou Wilt," and the quartet sang "Abide With Me." Mrs. V.R. Daniels accompanied. The pallbearers were: Fred Wullenwaber, P.A. Peterson, Don Goodrich, V.L. Michael, W.C. Hall, J.E. Portwood. The burial was in Nelson cemetery (sic). Roy Stephen Doher was born at Franklin, Nebraska, July 29, 1886, the oldest son of Stephen Thomas and Idyl Gillette Doher. He grew to manhood in Franklin and on the family farm northeast of town, attending the public schools. He later attended the Agricultural school of Nebraska at Lincoln, where is specialized in dairying. He was married to Miss Lulu Trussell of Rockingham, Missouri, November 25, 1909, and they lived for several years on the Doher farms near Franklin. They spent one year in the irrigation district near Torrington, Wyoming, later coming to Nelson (in 1923) where Mr. Doher was associated with J.F. Lee in the dairy business; later going into a dairy of his own which he has operated continuously since that time. Roy joined the Methodist church when a young man, being a boy of strong religious convictions. He held his conviction throughout many discouragements and disappoinmetns (sic), and worked hard to rear his children in an environment of ideals which build Christian character. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Doher: Steven, who is serving his country in the U.S. Navy as apprentice in the navy hospital, and is now stationed at Pearl Harbor; Don of Kimball who is working on the Sidney project; and Patricia Ann of Nelson. He is the first one deceased in a family of eight children of a pioneer family of Franklin county (sic) and is survived by his two brothers and five sisters, who were all present at the funeral. They are: Dr. Thomas L. Doher of Bayard, Paul E. Doher of Longmont, Colorado, Mrs. Mabel Hoatson of Chadron, Mrs. Karl L. Spence of Scottabluff (sic), Mrs. Earl Coleman of Alma, Mrs. Ray E. Webster and Mrs. Margaret Catron of Omaha. He is also survived by seven nieces and nephews.
