He was born on October 16, 1926, the youngest child of Pearl Dora Kaufmann Hain and Elwood Parker Hain, on their farm in Moscow, Iowa. Russel Edward Hain (USAF, Retired), 94, passed peacefully at home on December 7, 2020 in Austin, Texas. He was born on October 16, 1926, the youngest child of Pearl Dora Kaufmann Hain and Elwood Parker Hain, on their farm in Moscow, Iowa. Russel attended Wilton Public Schools from elementary through graduation in 1944. From February 1944 to August 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy V12 and V5 Pilot Training. In 1949 he joined the Air Force and graduated from the flight training program at Perrin Air Base, Texas, then getting his Silver Wings at Scott Field Base, IL. Now Lieut. Hain, he had his first assignment in 1950 at Hickam Air Force Base (AFB) Hawaii where he met and married his first wife, Ensign Adele B. Munson, a VR-7 Flight Nurse, and had their first two of four girls. From 1950 to 1956 he was a transport pilot of C54 and C-118 cargo planes and was stationed in Hawaii, New Hampshire and New Jersey. From 1956 to 1958 The Air Force Institute of Technology placed him at Iowa State College in Ames Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering and his third daughter was born. He returned to flying C-54 and C-118's on special missions from 1958 - 1962 from Hawaii, where daughter four was born. From 1962 - 1971 he was a computer programmer and analyst manager at Scott AFB in Illinois, Saigon Vietnam and Fuchu Air Station Japan. He was in Saigon during the TET Offensive in 1968. From 1971 - 1975 he was stationed at Hanscom AFB, MA as a computer program upgrade manager which entailed checkout and testing of the Worldwide Military Command Control System at Strategic Air Command Headquarters in Omaha, NE. From 1975 - 1976, Lt. Col. Hain was the test director for 485L Tactical Air Command Control improvements at Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX, where Lt. Col. Russel E. Hain retired from the Air Force on August 31, 1976. During his entire military career, Lt. Col. Hain served his country with honor and pride. After retiring from the Air Force, Russ ran a small business and sold real estate from 1976 - 1984. During this time, he met, courted and on April 6, 1985, married Bettye Jo Alberty, to whom he would always refer as "The Woman I Love". From 1984 - 1991 he worked at Tracor in Configuration Management for the Army's Blackhawk Helicopter Quick Fix Program. He officially retired in 1991 but continued as an active volunteer in all things Masonic, including The Ben Hur Shrine Temple, The Anson Jones Chapter 507 of the National Sojourners, Parsons Lodge #222, and others. Russel Hain's journey through the masonic Brotherhood was the guiding force of his life from his initiation into the Golden Rule Lodge #24 on December 11, 1947 until his passing. Through many tours of duty with the Air Force, he always found a Local Chapter to serve with, his last at Parsons Lodge #222, Austin, TX starting in 1976. He also joined Anson Jones Chapter 507 of the Sojourners and the Ben Hur Shrine in 1976. Through those years he mentored into his Lodge a great many fellow Masons and worked cheerfully and tirelessly in countless official and volunteer capacities. Brother Hain served as Worshipful Master and Treasurer of Parsons Lodge as well as President and Secretary/Treasurer of Anson Jones, for which he designed a superb Sojourner parade float, built in 1989 and still used to this day. He truly deserved every honor, citation and award bestowed upon him including The Golden Trowel in 1995, becoming District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District 50 at The Grand Lodge of Texas in December 2004, the Houghton Medal (second highest award given a National Sojourner) in June 2006 and the Scottish Rite Double Eagle in August 2009. Being a gifted singer, with ever a song in his heart, his very favorite activity through all this time may have been his years with The Ben Hur Shrine Chanters, a group of lovely and talented gentlemen, who shared his love of singing and, together, won multiple state championships. This love of music was also shared with Bettye Jo, with whom he enjoyed and supported several Austin-area Performing Arts Organizations. Russel Hain will be greatly missed by those he leaves behind. He was a loving Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend. He is preceded in death by his parents Elwood P. Hain and Pearl Kaufmann Hain; Brother Paul F. Hain, Sr. (Anna Mae); Brother Harold A. Hain (Betty); Sister Betty Kleindolph; his children's mother, Adele M. Hain; his nephew Robert J. Hain and his stepson James V. Collins. He leaves behind his wife, Bettye Jo Alberty Hain and her family which became his own, especially his cherished Step-granddaughter Danae Bailey, whom, with her husband Mike and children Keiley, James and Taylor, allowed him to pass at home with love and care; four daughters, Susan (Doug) Ryan of Fort Collins, CO, Cristie Lee of Fort Collins, CO, Pamela (Ed) Pierce of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Joyce Winn of Kyle, TX; five Grand-children (Megan, Shannon, Oren, Abbey and Rachel), two Great-grandsons (Rowan and Torin), Brother-in-law, Neal Kleindolph and the rest of his extended family with their own cherished memories of growing up with this dear man in their lives. A celebration of life will be held in a safer time TBD. The family requests no flowers.
