Born March 10, 1928, in Sang Run, he was a son of the late Wesley McClelland and Francis Maude (Friend) Friend. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Roger Lynn Friend; five brothers; and two sisters. Russell was a member of the Deep Creek Baptist Church, and in recent years, attended the Ferndale Baptist Church. He retired as the director of plant operations at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, with 33 years of service. Previous to this, he was employed by the Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan as a stock manager of the purchasing department, as well as at the Ford Motor Company in Michigan as a tool crib attendant. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the occupational forces, first in Tokyo, Japan, and later in Fort Bliss, Texas. After serving three years with the first cavalry division, he was honorably discharged on Nov. 22, 1949. For several years, he enjoyed leading tours to Israel. He was involved in the original civil defense for the emergency center at the GCMH. In addition, he maintained a current first grade engineer's license in the state of Maryland. In the mid-1960s, he owned a Christian bookstore on Alder Street, Oakland, and was a founding member of the Mtn. Lake Park Independent Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons; one daughter; two sisters; one brother; eight grandchildren; and two great-grand-children. (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend)
