Born March 12, 1918, in Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of the late Wesley M. And Frances M. (Friend) Friend. Mr. Friend was a member of Sang Run Christian Center and was a retired timberman. He served as Pfc. With the 197th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. Survivors include seven sons, Arnold and Mark Friend, both of Pompano, Fla., Richard, James, Jackson, David, and Steven Friend, all of Uniontown; four daughters, Mary Uphold, Betty Wardle and Barbara Kulenovic, all of Uniontown; Ruth Hare, McHenry; one brother, Russell Friend, Oakland; one sister, Ruth Spiker, McHenry; one half-brother, Ray Custer, Detroit, Mich.; 22 grandchildren and 18 grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 26722 Garrett Highway, McHenry, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sang Run Christian Center with the Rev. Joseph Spiker officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Sang Run Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by area veteran's service organizations. (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend. NOTE: Arnold's marriage to Bernice Carr Friend ended in divorce. Bernice died 16 days after Arnold on May 25 at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Arnold is buried in the Upper Sang Run Cemetery and Bernice is buried in the Lower Sang Run Cemetery.)
