Airy and widower of Addie Scott Hiatt, died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. Mr. Hiatt was born in Surry County on January 28, 1924, the son of the late Howard and Maggie Hall Hiatt. Russell was the owner and operator of Floyd’s Barber Shop on Main Street in Mount Airy for 70 years. He touched people from all over the world who came to visit or stop in for a haircut. Mr. Hiatt was a longtime member of Shelton Church of the Brethren. He is survived by a son, Billy Hiatt of Mount Airy; a daughter, Mrs. Carol H. Stone of Mount Airy; his grandchildren, Chris and Melissa Hiatt, Amanda and Mike Phillips; Kim and Clay Denny, and Emily and Mike Hawks; 14 great grandchildren, Jacob and Erin Hiatt, Scarlett and Mark Vogler, Rachel Hiatt, William Shelton, Addison Shelton, Keevie and Alex Wilmoth ;Klay Newsome, Katey Newsome, Maddison Hawks, Morgan Hawks, Mason Hawks, Maggie Hawks, Dakota Phillips, Sterling Phillips; a great-great grandson, Gibson Delph; brother and sisters-in-law, R. J. and Betty Hiatt of Mount Airy and Parabell S. Hiatt all of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Hawks. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Iris Hiatt; daughter-in-law, JoAnne Hiatt; a son-in-law, Jerry Stone; a sister, Freda Hawks; and brothers, Porter Hiatt and Wendell Hiatt. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Shelton Church of the Brethren with Rev. Richard Loman and Mr. Charles Vaughn officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Hiatt family will receive friends on Thursday night from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. His body will remain at the funeral home until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 400 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to Central Continuing Care, Activity Department, 1287 Newsome Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to thank the staffs of Central Continuing Care, Northern Hospital of Surry County, and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for the care and thoughtfulness during his illness. He was 92. For about seven decades, Hiatt trimmed up actors and athletes, musicians and politicians at Floyd's Barber Shop. His most famous customer was Andy Griffith, whose television show inspired the barbershop’s name. The barbershop, located next to Snappy Lunch, holds hundreds of photos and mementos from Hiatt’s long career. His shop was known as a place patrons could still get a shave with a straight razor, along with a piece of advice from Hiatt. “Every problem in the world has been solved right here,” he joked with WXII’s Cameron Kent during a 2013 story in Mount Airy. Funeral arrangements are pending. Long-time Mount Airy icon Russell Hiatt, known for his similarities to the famous Floyd the Barber from “The Andy Griffith Show,” has died. He was 92. Hiatt is known far and wide as the inspiration for the iconic character Floyd, from “The Andy Griffith Show.” For nearly 70 years, Hiatt was a downtown Mount Airy barber, quietly going about his business, giving haircuts to local residents — including a young Andy Griffith, Hiatt said on several occasions. Hiatt’s Main Street barbershop became famous as the popularity of The Andy Griffith Show remained constant over the years, and his small, plain shop was a major tourist draw in the city, with visitors often stopping in so they could tell friends and family back home they got a haircut at Floyd’s. Oftentimes, even if they didn’t need a haircut, tourists would stop in just to have their photos taken with Hiatt, a request he was always known to enjoy granting. Hiatt loved running his barbershop, a key to his being able to work there until he was 90 years old. “This is just my life. I love it, and you don’t do anything unless you love it,” he said during a January 2014 gathering at his shop to celebrate his birthday, with then-Mayor Deborah Cockran on hand to read a city proclamation naming Jan. 28 as Russell Hiatt Day. “I love people,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “Both of my sons are here with me, my daughter, my grandkids, and my great-grandchildren, and I love them all.” “It’s really amazing,” he continued. “There are people here from out of town just to be at my birthday party. Over the years, I’ve had people come in here from 40 countries.” During the ceremony that cold winter day, the barbershop was filled to overflowing by friends, relatives, city officials, and tourists who had made the trek to Mount Airy specifically for the celebration. Testament to his popularity were more than 20,000 pictures plastered to the walls, on desks, and virtually everywhere one could be shoehorned — photos of visitors who have walked through the doors of his shop for nearly seven decades. At that time Hiatt continued working nearly every day, although he soon had to scale back his work because of declining health. Most recently he had been in hospice care, according to several media reports.
