She was born Dec. 7, 1919 in Monroe, Wash. as Ruth Miller, the daughter of Harry and Clara Paulette Follett Miller. She moved to Mt. Pleasant at age four and attended school in Mt. Pleasant. On Nov. 5, 1938, she married Willis Willard Bain in Mt. Pleasant. She worked on the production line in a canning factory in Mt. Pleasant. Ruth and Willis then worked for a time in their home, processing bulk mail for Alaniz & Sons in Mt. Pleasant. Later, she also worked as a dishwasher at the former J&L Steakhouse on North Broadway and as a housekeeper in the motel adjoining the steakhouse. Ruth attended Bible study at Calvary Baptist Church. She was a gifted baker who decorated cakes for numerous birthdays and weddings and kept a supply of chocolate chip cookies on hand. She enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles and her extensive collection of pigs. She is survived by six daughters, Connie Hummell and her husband Kenneth of Mt. Pleasant, Janet Ford of Fairfield, Joan Orton and her husband Russell of Wever, Judy Hamm and her husband the Rev. Robert of Meta, Mo., and Candy Huston and Cristal Bain, both of Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, brother Frank Smith, sister Emma Anderson, and five grandchildren preceded her in death.
