She was married once, her husband having died forty six years ago. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dow, three of whom are now living, a son in Calif., Charles, with whom Mrs. Dow now lives and a daughter in Calif. She has one brother, Caleb Huckins of Plymouth who is 83 years old and a sister, Mrs. Abbie Hutchinson of Hanover, Me., who is 89 years old. Special to the Union Ashland, July 3 — Tomorrow Mrs. Ruth Dow will observe her 93rd birthday anniversary at her home on Main Street with a few of her relatives. Mrs. Dow was born in New Hampton July 4, 1812, and when quite young moved to Holderness, now Ashland, where she has lived ever since. She was married once, her husband having died forty-six years ago. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dow, three of whom are now living, Charles, with whom Mrs. Dow now lives, a son in Laconia and a daughter in Calif. Mrs. Dow is very well preserved mentally and physically and with the exception of a little defect in hearing is in perfect health. She arises at 5:30 o'clock every morning and does part of the housework. She has one brother, Luther Huckins, of Holderness, who is 85 years old and who will be with her tomorrow, another brother, Caleb Huckins of Plymouth, who is 82 years old and a sister, Mrs. Abbie Hutchins of Hanover, Me., who is 89 years old. Mrs. Dow remembers very well when the only means of transportation was by stage and her husband at one time was a stage driver. >The Manchester Union, July 3, 1905. The Ashland Town Reports tell us that Mrs. Dow died of pneumonia in Ashland February 6, 1907 at æ 94 years, 7 months and 1 day. She is the daughter of James and Abigail (Smith) Huckins, Jr. Through the death of Mrs. Ruth Dow, which occurred Tuesday night, Ashland has lost the oldest resident of this section of New Hampshire. If Mrs. Dow had lived until July 4 she would have been 95 years of age, being born in New Hampton in 1812 and living in this section of the state all her life, with about two years in Lowell where she went at the age of 20 years. At that time Mrs Dow traveled from her home in New Hampton to Lowell by stage to make the trip, there being no railroads through this section then. Mrs. Dow, up to within a few days of her death, retained her faculties to a remarkable degree and was able to tell many exciting adventures of the last century. Mrs. Dow came of good old revolutionary stock, both her grandfathers having fought against Great Britain. Her grandfather Smith was one of the earliest settlers in New Hampton going there at the close of the war. Mrs. Dow could also talk of the Civil War, as she had two sons serving with the Union Army, and one, also John, was so badly wounded at Cold Harbor that he died soon after being sent to Washington. Mrs. Dow was the oldest of a family of six children, four of whom were boys and two girls. Mrs. Dow had a sister, Mrs Abbie Hutchins of Hanover, Maine, 92 years old, and Caleb A. Huckins of Plymouth, 84 years of age. She has five children, three of whom are living. They are Mrs. Sam Hodgdon of this town, Rufus P., of Laconia and Charles H., with whom she was living at the time of her death, and with whom she had lived for the last 37 years. Her death was due to old age, possibly being hastened a little by contracting a slight cold. The funeral was held at the Dow home on Main Street, Friday at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Mr. Avery as the officiating clergyman. Interment was in Green Grove Cemetery. >The Ashland Citizen, February 9, 1907, p5.
