"A pall of gloom was cast over the village Tuesday morning when news came of the passing of Mrs. James Runyan, for 57 years a resident of Custer County, a member of one of Mason City's most influential families, and one of the best loved women in the community. A few days prior to her death, pneumonia developed and she was taken to a Grand Island hospital for treatment. She was given the best medical care and attention, everything humanly possible was done to save her life; but she passed away peacefully at 3 o'clock a.m., March 21, 1939, having reached her 71st year. Because of the departed's long residence in the town, and the high esteem in which she is held in the community, the heart-felt sympathy of a host of friends is extended to the bereaved husband, the sons and daughter, who feel the blow most keenly. Those who have been in the Runyan home and noted the affectionate care lavished on Jim by his wife realize how grievous is the loss to him. Ruth O. Trobee was born in Marion County, Iowa, October 15, 1868, being a daughter of the late A.P. and Almira Trobee. She grew to young womanhood and was educated in the public schools of her native state. In 1882, she came with her parents to Custer County, Nebraska and has lived here continuously since that date. On December 19, 1886, Ruth O. Trobee and James Runyan were united in marriage, the ceremony being performed in Mason City by Justice John A. Hall. The young couple began their married life on a homestead joining the town site of Mason and as one of the pioneers of Custer County, Mrs. Runyan soon proved herself to be the ideal type of womanhood. Out of that one-room sod shanty she made a home; and as the county developed, this home, with added duties and responsibilities, expanded and prospered. Throughout their wedded life, it was a union devoted to their home, their family and their church, and the wife and mother's activities were centered almost exclusively in these interests. December 19, 1936, the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. James Runyan was fittingly observed at which time the town and community joined in a public tribute to them, voicing a fine expression of appreciation and esteem. Of six children born of this marriage, one daughter and three sons survive; Miss Fern Runyan, Emery and Wright of Mason City, and Dr. Orville Runyan of Omaha. Two daughters preceded their mother in death. Surviving also besides the husband and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Lesan, Jamestown, North Dakota and Sophia Dady, Clearfield, Iowa; two brothers, J.A. Trobee, Eugene, Oregon and Frank Trobee, Arnold, Nebraska; eleven grandchildren, a number of nephews and nieces, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral rites were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Baptist Church, of which the deceased had been an active member for 57 years, Rev. Raymond Hill, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the Mason City Cemetery. So we pause for a moment with bowed head - in memory of another pioneer Nebraska mother who has done her duty and passed on."
