Description	:	Ruth Virginia Chittum Brooks, 86, wife of the late Eugene Rowan Brooks, Sr. of 6064 Lee Jackson Highway, Raphine, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her family after a long battle against cancer. She was born October 30, 1924 in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Clyde and Lula Cox Chittum. She was salutatorian of her class at Spottswood High School. Ruth was an active member of Mt. Read More	Ruth Virginia Chittum Brooks, 86, wife of the late Eugene Rowan Brooks, Sr. of 6064 Lee Jackson Highway, Raphine, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her family after a long battle against cancer. She was born October 30, 1924 in Augusta County, a daughter of the late Clyde and Lula Cox Chittum. She was salutatorian of her class at Spottswood High School. Ruth was an active member of Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church and served as deacon. She was secretary treasurer of the Steeles Tavern VFW Auxiliary, an avid vegetable gardener, and loved writing poetry. Her family was her life and joy from parents and siblings to her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include four children and their spouses, E. R. and Sue Brooks, Jeffrey and Sabrina Brooks, Waltine Simmers, all of Raphine and Becky and Elliott Boyd of Staunton; six grandchildren, Michele Dodrill, Chrisley Simmers, Justin Brooks, Jennifer Kennedy, Joey Fazio, and Brooke Boyd; seven great-grandchildren, Alissa and Kendra Dodrill, Christopher, Zachary, and Natalie Brooks, Levi and Luke Kennedy. Also surviving is a brother, Earl Chittum and wife, Marjorie, a sister, Pauline Austin, a number of nieces and nephews, and a special friend Kay “Ma“ Connor. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters and a son-in-law, Ronnie Simmers. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church with burial in the Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Hedley Coffey, Layne King, Dale Dodrill, Bud Brooks, Michael Hemp, and Martin Chittum. Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Henry Funeral Home and other times at her residence. Special thanks go to the staff of the Hope Center at Augusta Health. Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 8, Steeles Tavern, VA, to the Raphine Fire Company, P. O. Box 2142, Raphine, VA or Relay For Life.
