To have lived it together in love, affection and harmony for 62 years is most unusual. The fact that such a life was lived by Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Shippy in our midst is a helpful and fortunate occurance [sic] for us. To have been able to observe their long years together that were lived with such courage and to know that love and devotion can last through 62 years, lightening burdens and making life hopeful and happy is a wonderful opportunity for our community. As a young couple just beginning their married life, they came to Lamoni in 1888 and have resided here continually since that time. When Mary Jane Bond and Saleda Shippy repeated the marriage vows, "until death do us apart," they meant them with all of their hearts and although in their long journey together they encountered many sorrows, saw bright hopes blasted and endured agonies, they were together and that was enough for them. When the sun seemed to be going down they looked up to the stars, when the earth was dark they looked to Heaven, when one was weak the other was strong. Mrs. Shippy was taken quite sick from the shock and exposure suffered several days ago when their house was damaged by fire. Because his loved companion was ill, Mr. Shippy worried to such an extent that within a few days he himself was sick. It was on Wednesday that he became seriously ill and by Saturday [January 5, 1935] due to heart failure, he passed away. Although Mrs. Shippy was so ill that she was not expected to live, she made all of the funeral arrangements for her husband. Every wish she made was granted. On Tuesday evening [January 8, 1935] Mrs. Shippy passed away from this life to once more be with the husband who had meant so much to her. The funeral arrangements that were made for Mr. Shippy now included his wife. Death did not part for long this devoted couple — they were laid to rest, side by side in the same grave. As they lived, they died. Saleda David Shippy was born June 19, 1848 at Voree, Wis., and departed this life on January 5, 1935, at the age of 86 years and 6 months. Early in life he united with the Latter Day Saint church, to which faith he remained most faithful throughout his life. Mary Jane Bond was born October 27, 1851, at Joliet, Ill., and passed away at her home in Lamoni on January 8, 1935, at the age of 83 years and two months. On May 24, 1873 she was married to Saleda Shippy at London, Ontario. To this union were born four sons, Saleda Elvert, who died May 16, 1911; Moroni, of Lamoni; Silas S., of Kansas City, Mo., and Norman, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Shippy leave besides their children, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, a sister of Mr. Shippy, Mrs. Mariam Claus, of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Ann McKenzie, of Benheim, Ontario, sister of Mrs. Shippy. Double funeral services were held at the White Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon [January 9, 1935]. Services were in charge of Roy A. Cheville, music by the Graceland College music department.
