Funeral services at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest with full military honors by the combined American Legion/VFW posts in the Marshalltown area. Born on May 29th, 1935, in Marshalltown, he was the son of Joseph and Elda (Bunger) Giarratano. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School and attended Marshalltown Junior College. Sam served our country honorably in the United States Army in engineering. Sam was employed in insurance, carpet and furniture retail, and owned and operated Joen's Store in Gilman. He was an active member of the American Legion Frank Lewis Glick Post #46 (serving as two term commander), 40 & 8, Coliseum Committee, Sons of the American Legion, and the All-Veterans Committee. On August 21st, 1976, he married Leota (Rouse), at the Little Brown Church. They made their home in Marshalltown all of their married lives. Sam was previously married to Helen Andrews in 1955. Surviving are Leota, his wife of 42 years; four children, Don (Rama) Giarratano of Henderson, Nevada, Connie (James) Poole of Marshalltown, Dawn Clapsaddle of Marshalltown, and Michelle (Patrick) Coles of Des Moines; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother Tom (Karen) Giarratano; sister Genevieve Crawford all of Marshalltown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
