Description	:	Samuel Bair, Jr. (also spelled Bare, Bear, Baer) was the son of Samuel Bare and Sarah Sager. He lived the first years of his life with his family in South Huntingdon Township, PA, until the outbreak of the Civil War. He served in the 142nd PA Volunteers Infantry, Company B. Service was from 10 Aug 1862 through 29 May 1865. He fought during the first day at the Battle of Gettysburg, as well as Fredericksburg, Petersburg and Chancellorsville. Read More	Samuel Bair, Jr. (also spelled Bare, Bear, Baer) was the son of Samuel Bare and Sarah Sager. He lived the first years of his life with his family in South Huntingdon Township, PA, until the outbreak of the Civil War. He served in the 142nd PA Volunteers Infantry, Company B. According to Daniel Baer in his documented family history: "Sam Bair reportedly came back from the war so unkempt that he had to take off his clothes and burn them. However he did come back with his gun... Art Baer told the story that Sam used to explain the scared [sic] wound along his hairline. Sam said 'I should have ducked.'... In 1872 Sam Bair moved to Denison, Iowa. He must have left from Pennsylvania as Sam Bair never lived in Clinton, Iowa... Before the Civil War Joseph and Sam had lived in South Huntingdon Township all their lives. Then when the Civil War came to pass their service experiences took them to many places, North and South. One wonders if their diverse war-time experiences gave them the desire to find new places to live." Both Sam and his brother Joseph served in PA regiments during the Civil War. Joseph served in the place of their brother Andrew J. Baer, who was supporting his family and his mother's family. Sam lived to be 91 years of age.
