In 1821, among Methodists at Bloomington, Indiana, he enlisted again, not under Jackson, but under Jesus with weapons of warfare not "carnal," but spiritual. This term... Samuel Hite...Was born in Shenandoah county, Virginia of wealthy and respectable parents. In young manhood he removed to Tennessee, and enlisted as a soldier under Gen. Jackson, during the War of 1812, for which service a grateful country rewarded him with a pension. In 1821, among Methodists at Bloomington, Indiana, he enlisted again, not under Jackson, but under Jesus with weapons of warfare not "carnal," but spiritual. This term of service continued 56 years. He led a Methodist class as long as Moses led Israel and received a daily pension of peace, and when discharged a robe of righteousness and an immortal crown. On July 20th, 1877, at midnight, a fitting close came to so good a life. Under the care of his only daughter surrounded by his children's children to the fifth generation, the old man in the 94th year of his pilgrimage, loved and honored, just and saintly died.
