(Sam) Maley Is Dead; Famed As Big Grain Producer Helped Pioneer Large Scale Wheat Farming; Held Interests in 2 States Services Are Held In Sidney Monday Funeral services were held from the Gehrig Funeral home Monday afternoon for Samuel A. Maley, 71, one of the colorful "wheat kings" of an era that established this territory as the nation's most important wheat producing center. Mr. Maley died in a local hospital early last Friday night, following two years of failing health. He had virtually been bedfast for a year and a half. Services were in charge of Rev. Virgil Smith of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in Sidney Greenwood cemetery. Pallbearers were Leon Lafler, Chester Phelps, Rudy Grage, M.W. Dimery, P.J. Heaton, and Perry Dobbin. Mr. Maley was a native of Little York, Illinois, born July 18, 1869. When he was a year old his parents moved to Stanwood, Iowa, and Mr. Maley remained a resident of Iowa until he came west to Cheyenne county in 1915. When Mr. Maley came into western Nebraska, this territory was rapidly establishing itself as the "bread basket" of the middlewest. With characteristic vision and energy, he was not long in entering the wheat producing picture on a large scale. With vast acreages in western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado he helped pioneer the breaking of sod in new areas and was actively farming several sections of wheat land each year. Mr. Maley personally supervised the planting and harvesting of this great acreage and was constantly in touch with the progress of his crops. He was noted for his optomism and his judgement of crop conditions and prospects. For many years "Sam" Maley's opinion on the general wheat outlook was accepted as authority. A few years ago Mr. Maley was featured in an article in The Saturday Evening Post, in which he was called a "suitcase farmer". He took a definate dislike to this term and hastened to emphasize the fact to the editors of the magazine. The terms often applied to city dwellers who owned farm land, did not fit Mr. Maley. Although he customarily spent his winters in California, no farmer was in closer touch with his land holdings and crop prospects. He usually shipped his own grain to market, and during the past twenty years had sent hundreds of carloads of wheat to Omaha, Kansas City, and other middlewestern terminals. Mr. Maley is survived by his widow, Louise, two sons, Oran of Sidney and Raymond of McGrew, four grandchildren, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Hallie Flansburg of Stanwood, Ia.; Mrs. Nina Starry of Springville, Ia.; Mrs. Elva Jacobi and Mrs. Mattie Stowell of Chicago; Mrs. Tressa Neil of Marion, Ia.; Raymond of Sidney; John of Ogallala and James of Reynolds, Ia. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
