They made their home in Carroll County, where their first 9 children were born: Walter Bailey Reed; Ruth Ellen Reed; Myra Electra Reed; Jemima Ellen Reed; James Orson Reed; Sarah Elvira Reed; Alice Edith Reed; Bessie Elva Reed; and Olive Ethyl Reed. Their 10th child, Bruce McKinley Reed, was born in Dolliver, Emmett County, IA. The family came to Emmet County in 1891, locating on a farm west of Dolliver. Samuel came to the county one year earlier from Carroll County, IL to put in the crops. In January of 1891, he went back to Illinois to move the family to Iowa. They lived in Estherville for about 3 months while Samuel and his oldst son, Walter (then 14), hauled lumber to build a barn, which they finished in late March of that year. The family moved into the barn and lived there over a year until the house could be built. The house was completed in the spring of 1892. Samuel and Polly lived there for the next 12 years, and then moved to Dolliver, Iowa where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Samuel died just a few months shy of their 65th wedding anniversary. -- thank you to Merllene Andre Bendixen for the following obituaries: S. B. Reed, Pioneer, Dead Samuel B.Reed, one of Emmet county's oldest citizens and one of its finest characters passed away at his home in Dolliver Monday afternoon. Mr. Reed has been in failing health for a long time but has not been seriously ill until a few weeks ago. Mr. Reed was born in Carroll county, Ill., December 22, 1849 and on Sept. 22, 1875 he was united in marriage to Sylvia A. Bailey. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. Mr. Reed came to Emmet county in 1890 and commenced farming near Dolliver. He brought his family to this county the following year. They resided on the farm for many years and then moved to Dolliver. Mr. Reed was during his earlier life active in politics. He was a friend of all who knew him and was beloved by all. Always looking for the opportunity to assist his friends and neighbors. He was a man it was a pleasure to know and been friendly with. He is survived by his widow and nine children. W.B. Reed, Minneapolis; Mrs. Alice Shuttleworth, Thompson; Mrs. F. R. Dowden, Spirit Lake; Mrs. A. R. Eckhart, Dolliver, and B.M. Reed, Hollandale, Minn. He is also survived by 41 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon from the home at 2:30 and 10:30 at the Methodist church, the Rev. C. L. Reed, 90, of Dolliver, one of Emmet county's oldest residents, died yesterday at 3 p.m. at his home in Dolliver. He had been in poor health for several years, but was not taken seriously ill until the first of June. Mr. Reed and his family came to Emmet county in 1891, locating on a farm west of Dolliver. Mr. Reed came to the county a year earlier from Carroll county, Ill., and put in the crops and in January, 1891, he went back to Illinois and brought his family to the farm. They lived in the barn on the farm for about 16 months, while the house was being built. During this time they "boarded" the school teacher for the neighborhood school. Mayor for Many Years The family lived on the farm for about 12 years and then moved to Dolliver. Mr. Reed has lived there since. He was mayor of Dolliver for many years. He was born Dec. 22, 1849 in Carroll county, Ill. He married Sylvia Bailey, Sept. 22, 1875. Had Mr. Reed lived until Sept. 22, this year, they would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Widow, Nine Children Survive Mr. Reed is survived by his widow, 86; and nine children, W.B. Reed, Fairmont, Minn., Mrs. Ruth Caylor [Cayler], Dolliver, who has lived with her parents for some time; Mrs. Ben Trimble, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Mrs. Mima Wertz, Estherville; J.O. Reed, Minneapolis; Mrs. Alice Shuttleworth, Thompson; Mrs. F.R. Dowden, Spirit Lake; Mrs. A.R. Eckhart, Dolliver; and B.M. Reed, Hollandale, Minn. He is also survived by 41 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sarah, who died when she was four years old, one brother and four sisters. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Reed home in Dolliver Methodist church. The Rev. C.L. Day will conduct the rites. Burial will be in the Dolliver cemetery.
