Description	:	Samuel was born in Sussex County, New Jersey. He went with his parents to Michigan about 1836 and assisted in the operation of the family farm until he was 23 years, teaching school in winter during the last five years. On 22 April 1860 Samuel married Emma Rosetta Hanes daughter of John Calhoun Hanes and Losena Hoatlin Hanes. In April 1862 Samuel and his wife started overland in the famous Heinz wagon train to California, going directly to Lassen County. He went with his parents to Michigan about 1836 and assisted in the operation of the family farm until he was 23 years, teaching school in winter during the last five years. On 22 April 1860 Samuel married Emma Rosetta Hanes daughter of John Calhoun Hanes and Losena Hoatlin Hanes. In April 1862 Samuel and his wife started overland in the famous Heinz wagon train to California, going directly to Lassen County. There was a large immigration to the valley that year, the largest that ever came with the exception of 1859. Among those making the overland trip with Samuel were the families of Hiram Dakin, Flave Winchell, Hiram Skadan and Joseph Wemple's wife. Joseph Wemple, a step-son of John Calhoun Hanes was already in California. While the wagon train was still camped under the trees on the shores of Honey Lake (on land later part of the Bailey Ranch), Samuel and Rosetta's first son, Floyd Burdette Hoffman was born in a tent. In the fall of 1862 Samuel acquired a farm of 320 acres, located three miles east of Janesville. It was all good agricultural land and he improved it with a large comfortable home and substantial farm buildings. He had other business interests also and was a leader in community activities. In 1868 Samuel and his family went back to Michigan for a visit by way of the Isthmus of Panama and cam back to California on the first continental train. About 1890 Samuel turned over the operation of the ranch to his sons, Floyd and Marcus William Hoffman. He and his wife established their home in Susanville living there until their deaths.
