Nov. 25 while at home with his family. He was born December 20, 1920 in Tampa, Fla., the oldest of nine children of Samuel David Smith and Edith Steele. The family moved to Abbeville S.C., where they made their home for many years when Sam was a child. At the age of 19, Sam joined the Navy just before the start of WWII, serving as chief pharmacist mate in the submarine service, on board the USS Jack. While stationed in Bermuda, he met and married his eternal companion, Edith Eileen Pereira, whom he affectionately called Molly, Nov. 26, 1942. Their family was sealed in the Cardston, Alberta, Temple in 1950. After WWII, Sam moved his wife and three children to Helena and worked as a Navy Recruiter. Not long after moving to Montana, he retired from the Navy and joined the Army Reserve, serving his country for over 21 years. He continued to work in Helena for Knapp Service, Hauser Dam, and Canyon Ferry Dam where he was the foreman. For several years he worked three jobs at the same time to provide for his family. After he retired from Canyon Ferry, Sam and Molly moved to Nibley, Utah, to care for his mother. In 2004 they moved back to Montana to live with their daughter in Townsend. In March of 2007 Sam moved to Ronan to live and be cared for by his son Dave and his family. Sam loved gardening and he and Molly enjoyed many bountiful harvests. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping and was a Boy Scout Leader for many years. Caring for his family — from his parents and siblings to his children and grandchildren — was uppermost in his life. He was kind and compassionate not only to his immediate family but his circle included many who needed help. His integrity was as strong as his handshake. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Starks, and granddaughter Amy Smith. He is survived by his wife, Molly, of Townsend; sons, Samuel David III (Carol), Ronan; Tony (Carol), Helena; daughter Carolyn Sangray (Jack), Townsend; brothers, Harold of Ogden, Utah; John of Nibley; Martin of Nibley; Pete of Abbeville, S.C.; sisters, Fleda of Logan, Utah; Julia of Abbeville, SC; and Patricia of Nibley. Sam and Molly also have 19 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends during visitation hours from 1 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. Friday, 1610 6th Ave. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at the Church. Interment with military honors will follow at the Montana State Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Montana Council Boy Scouts of America, Prickley Pear District, 820 17th Ave. South, Great Falls, MT 59405 or the Montana State Veterans Cemetery P.O. Box 5715 Helena, MT 59604. Funeral service arrangements are under the care and direction of Retz Funeral Home.
