Read More	Former Clarksville Resident Died At Home On Spirit Lake Funeral for Sam Stephens here Wednesday Sam Stephens, resort owner at Orleans, Ia. on the east side of Spirit Lake and former resident of Clarksville, passes away at his cottage in Orleans, Sunday, July 14, 1940, at 9:30 P.M. His death followed a long illness. In his younger days Mr. Stephens was a farmer and later operated the picture show in Clarksville. He and his wife moved to Spirit Lake in 1917 and built the Wayside Inn which they operated as a resort in the summer months. He retained property interests in Clarksville and often spent the winter months here and visited old friends on numerous occasions. In his operation of the resort at Spirit Lake he made many friends over the state who will miss seeing him when they return. Sam Stephens was born at Hazel Green, Wisc. on February 21, 1856 and passed away at the age of 84 years, 4 mo., and 21 days. He was the son of Elizabeth and Henry Stephens, his parents, coming from England in a sail boat and were seven weeks on the sea. He was married to Eliza Finney and to this union four children, 3 daughters and one son, were born. The wife and daughters preceded him in death. The daughters were Mrs., Bessie Vogt, Mrs. Cora Birum. Mrs. Birum passed away Nov. 12, 1939. Mrs. Edith Gilbert was also a daughter. In 1912 he was married to Miss Ada Taylor of Clarksville and in 1917 they moved to Spirit Lake,Ia., where they have since resided. Surviving are his widow, one son, William Stephens of Waverly, Ia., who is very ill, a son-in-law- Geo. Birum of Osage, two granddaughters, Mrs. Jerry Elman of Osage and Mrs. Fritz Olson of Mason City, and one grandson, Stephen Birum of Albert City, and three great granddaughters. A short prayer service was held at Spirit Lake, Tuesday, and the body brought to Clarksville where funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Hammel Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Marsh officiating. Interment was in Lynwood Cemetery. Clarksville Star July 18, 1940
