Stephens had cut her throat with a razor, and that she had died soon after the deed had been committed. Soon after seven o'clock Mr and Mrs. Stephens were up and working about the kitchen. While Mr.Stephens was building the fire, Mrs. Stephens returned to her bedroom without saying a word. A noise came from her room which attracted the attention of members of her family, who went to see what the trouble was. They found Mrs. Stephens sitting by the side of the bed, covered with blood. Her throat was cut from ear to ear. Neighbors were called. C.J. Brodie was among the first to arrive. He tried to lift Mrs. Stephens to the bed. She said, "Don't try to move me," and those were the last words she spoke. She had done the job so thoroughly that death came to her relief a few minutes later. The razor used was one she had taken from her son's trunk. After she had done the deed she had thrown the razor under the bed, where it was found later. Mrs. Stephens had not been well for several years but the day before this tragedy she seemed to be more cheerful than usual. She rode with her husband to the farm in LaFayette township. The evening before she had been at the theatre with her daughters, and all who came in contact with her believed she was quite rational and well. She left a letter addressed to her children in which she said she was going to leave them. This letter was found among some of her things. Coroner Bubel held an inquest with C.J. Brodie, W.C. Schlaberg and F.E. Eldridge as jurors. Dr. L.C. Kern, the deceased's physician, was the first witness examined. Among other things the doctor testified that in his judgement Mrs. Stephens was mentally imbalanced. Other testimony was taken. The verdict of the jury was that Mrs. Stephens came to her death by cutting her jugular vein with a razor by her own hand, Besides her husband and her children who are mentioned elsewhere in this article, Mrs. Stephens leaves brothers and sisters as follows: Newton Finney and Mrs. A.S. Pauley of Waverly; Miss Mary A. Finney, of Cedar Falls; Mrs. S.E.Boualt of Charles City; Mrs. Ettie Lovering, of Belden, Nebr.; Mrs. Hattie Miller of Stickney, S.D.; and Henry Finney of Omaha, Nebr. The parents of the Finneys came to Iowa from Elkhart County, Indiana and settled in Chickasaw County in 1855, near the then flourishing town of Bradford, where they lived a few years before moving to Bremer County. Mrs. Eliza Ellen Stephens was born in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana, and passed away at her home in Waverly January 17th. She was married to Mr. Samuel H. Stephens Nov. 25, 1875. To this union five children were born, four of whom survive the mother - William Stephens, of Waverly; Mrs. Geo. Birum, Osage, Ia; Mrs. Bessie Vogt, Waverly, and Miss Edith Stephens, Waverly. About twenty-four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Stephens moved to Bremer County and settled on a farm five miles north of this city. Last winter the farm was rented and the family came to Waverly to live. Mrs. Stephens was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church for some years, faithful in her obligations to the church and generous with her means towards its support. For some time past, Almighty God saw it to grievously afflict her. The cause is not of the realm of the finite, but of the infinite, hence beyond our comprehension. On Sabbath morning she passed out of the shadows into the light. Mr. Stephens life was a quiet one. Her work was in her home and to her home she gave herself with untiring industry. No life passes into the Beyond without leaving memories which influence the world. Thoughtfulness for the welfare of her children and helpfulness for her neighbors were characteristics of her life. Funeral services were held at the family residence Tuesday afternoon at 1:30, conducted by Rev. Crowder. Waverly, Iowa newspaper 1909
