Gen, State of New Jersey March 26, 1929, Having reference to your recent request there is submitted information concerning the Samuel Hopping who performed military service during the Revolutionary War period, Samuel Hopping was Private, Captain Israel Ward's Company, Eastern Battalion, Morris County Militia (without date); Private, Captain Ward's Company, Colonel Silvanus Seely's Eastern Battalion; Morris County New Jersey Militia, May 1778; received certificate 815, amounting to 1 pound, 4s, for the depreciation of his Continental pay in the Morris County, New Jersey Militia, during the Revolutionary War. Frederick Gilkyson The Adjutant General. Stryker's, Jerseymen in the Revolutionary War, gives the following on page 635:- "Ezekiel, John, Samuel and Silas Hopping were privates in the Morris County, New Jersey, Militia", In Stillwell's Historical Miscellany, Vol 2, page 279. "THE PRESBYTERIAN BURYING GROUND, MIDDLETOWN, N,J," "On the south side of the highway running through Middletown may be seen, standing close to the road, an enclosed grave yard. In summer it is somewhat obscured by the dense growth of shrubs and weeds, but in winter, when the leaves have fallen, it cannot fail to attract attention. It lies between the farm of Dr, Edward Taylor on the west and the farm of the late Crawford Hendrickson, Esq., on the east. It was here that the Presbyterian Church was erected, and where in turn the Rev. Messrs, John Boyd, Joseph Morgan, Samuel Blair, Elihu Spencer and Charles McKnight preached the gospel. In time, both pastors and flock were dispersed, and the church fell into decay, At what time its final demolition occurred it is hard to say, but it was many years ago. The tombstones in this cemetery are in a singularly fine state of preservation, owing partly to the exposed condition of the stones and protection thereby from dampness, and partly to the fine quality of the stone itself. Of the exceptions to this that exist, the most conspicuous is that of the tombstone of John Bowne Esq. which is badly effaced near the ground level. A few others are beginning to yield to time, having cracked and fallen to the earth, but in the main the condition of the plot and the stones is better than will be found in yards of more recent origin, The oldest stone is that of Capt. John Bowne, erected In 1715-16. It is not unlikely that some were interred here prior to that date, of whom there is now no visible record The following inscriptions were copied from one of the well preserved stones by this writer; In Memory of Sarah Wife of Samuel Hopping who departed this life May 12, 1800, in the 44th year of her age, In Memory of Samuel Hopping who departed this life Feb. 13, 1824, in the 81st year of his age, THE LAST WILL OF SAMUEL HOPPING In the name of God amen, I Samuel Hopping of Middletown, County of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, being in health and of sound mind and memory, for which blessing I most devoutly thank my God, do this twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixteen, make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say it is my will and I do order that all my Just debts and funeral expenses be duely paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease Item I give and devise to my daughter Sarah Dorn the use of all that Lot or tract of Land that I hold by deed of sale made to me by James Lloyd Esquire high Sheriff of the County of Monmouth, dated the Twenty-second day of July one thousand eight Hundred and six for the support of herself and family and to be made use of as my executors shall order and direct and after the decease of my daughter Sarah Dorn I order and direct that the said tract of land be sold by my executors & in case they should all be dead by the eldest of my daughter Sarah Dorn's Children that is then living and I do hereby authorize my executors or in case of their death as aforesaid the eldest of my Daughter Sarah Dorn's children that shall be then living to sel and make good and sufficient conveyances in the law for the same, Item I Give and bequeath the Neat proceeds arising from the sale of the aforesaid lands to be equally divided between my daughter Sarah Dorn's children share and share alike and if any of my Daughter Sarah Dorn's children should be dead having left lawful heir or heirs then the heir or heirs of such deceased child or children shall have the share their ancestor would have had if living I order and direct that a certain bond I hold against John Hopping & Primrose Hopping for the payment of thirteen hundred and fifty dollars payable to my executors to be collected without delay and out of the money to pay the following Legacies to wit I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Hopping fifty dollars, Item I Give and Bequeath to my Daughter Sarah Dorn fifty dollars, Item I give and bequeath to my four daughters to wit Ann Chasey, Phebe Tilton, Harriet Hopping & Rebekah Hopping three Hundred and twelve dollars & fifty cents a piece or each one to have that sum--the share of Ann is not to be paid to Jos, Chasey nor to Ann while she remains the wife or Joseph Chasey Tarter than my executors in their discession may think she stands in need but when she ceases to be the wife of Joseph Chasey then to pay her the remainder or the whole that is bequeathed to her in this will that has not been paid before, Item I give and bequeath the Neat proceeds of my moveable estate not otherwise bequeathed to be equally divided between Ann Chasey, Phebe Tilton, Harriet Hopping and Rebekah Hopping share and share alike Ann's share to be paid as before directed. Lastly I hereby appoint may sons John Hopping and James Hopping and my friend James Frost executors of this my last will and Testament,. Dear Sir- Enclosed herein please find the letters from your aunt, I have been to see my sister since writing you before and find that we are about as closely related as can be in this generation and much more so than I anticipated when I first wrote you. Your grandfather Ephriam was brother to my grandfather Primrose. They were sons of Samuel Hopping who had thirteen children, my sister thinks. She can recollect eleven of their names, but of course we do not know the order of their ages, They are named as follows: Ephriam, your grandfather Primrose, my grandfather Daniel Samuel Thomas James John, whom I knew well Phoebe, with whom I lived (married Isaac Tilton) Ann, married a Chasey Rebecca, first wife of Jos. Conover Harriet, second wife of Jos, Conover I remember Aunt Harriet well, and have spent many a pleasant day in my boyhood on fishing expeditions with her husband who was a carpenter and boat builder. James and John, Primrose and the four girls all lived in Monmouth County in the vicinity of Middletown, An ancestress was an Irish woman named "Sally" Primrose, which will account for my grandfather's name, I shall endeavor to visit Morris County as soon as the weather is suitable for driving, as I am now living at Orange, NJ, only about eight miles from Hanover which is and was the home of the Hoppings, more than any other place, As this letter may be of interest to your aunt, I enclose a carbon which you can forward to her if you would like to do so, Yours Truly, G.
