On Saturday, April 5, 1872, as the clock in the steeple of life pointed to his "three score years and ten," peacefully he lay down in that sleep which knows no waking. There were no tolling bells, no flags at half-mast; there will be no gleaming shaft pointing high heavenward, or gilded mausoleum to do honor to his memory or perpetuate his name, but breaking hearts followed his bier to the grave, and trembling hands lowered his remains to the vault, and tenderly covered them with the clods of the valley, and he with his own hands has erected for himself a monument "more lasting than brass" in the hearts of those who knew him. Samuel Luther was born near Raleigh, North Carolina, in the month of April, 1802. At about the age of twenty he was married to Dora Green, who still survives. In 1823 he emigrated to Indiana, and settled in Clay County, near Bowling Green, where he resided till May, 1849, when he removed to Iowa, and settled on the spot where he died. The records of the county show that he bought Richard Green's "claim" on the land, and that on January 23, 1849, he entered it of the United States. There is no other conveyance of this land, and each and every one of the twenty two years that the land was taxable the taxes were always paid before due. In the summer of 1849 he built a log house which he subsequently added to and enlarged, yet the original house was his home and in it he lived and died. When he settled in Boone county there was no Boonsboro, no Boone, no railroad within the State, and no travelled road north of his place except the old trail on the divide, some two miles east of his place. His trading point was Oskaloosa, and now and then he could make purchases at Des Moines. He soon made the largest farm north of Des Moines and as long as he was able to attend to his farm personally he was the largest and most successful farmer in the county. He had been reared among the rocks of Carolina, improved a heavily timbered farm in Indiana, and the rich level prairies of Iowa had many attractions for him. He lived twenty three years in each of these states. Success crowned his efforts, and he lived to see his children settled near him, rich and prosperous, and his own store sufficient for another life time's use. No one can properly portray his character. The lamented Judge McFarland used to say he was one of "God's noble Men" These words express it. He was of the school of our fathers—economical but not to a fault, industrious, prompt, and fair in all business transactions, considerate and warm hearted as a neighbor, and overflowing with kindness as a friend, husband, and father. No one ever found warmer hearts and better cheer than at his home. Although not a member of any church, he was a Christian in every sense of the word. No one ever went away from his door dissatisfied or afraid to call again. Would to God that everybody was life him, but his life we shall never see; his place can never be filled. On by one the old pioneers of the county are disappearing. A few frosted heads and tottering footsteps are yet to be seen lingering and waiting for the "shadows to grow taller that they too may take up their march to that bourns from whence no traveler returns." Mr. Luther has gone, and ere the idea of November shall roll round another name will be added to the list of our loved and lost. As we drop the burning tears of regret for his loss we will strew his grave with the freshest flowers the heart can give, and plant there the cypress of mourning that we many never forget him."
