Cox, 60, district agricultural extension agent for Northern Virginia and former Rockingham county farm agent, died unexpectedly Saturday night, August 14, at his home near Timberville. A native of Grayson county, the deceased was a son of the late Capt. Melville B. Cox and wife, who resided near Bridle Creek, and was, himself, a former well known Grayson county citizen. Cox, 60, district agricultural extension agent for Northern Virginia and former Rockingham county farm agent, died unexpectedly Saturday night, August 14, at his home near Timberville. A native of Grayson county, the deceased was a son of the late Capt. Melville B. Cox and wife, who resided near Bridle Creek, and was, himself, a former well known Grayson county citizen. Mr. Cox had served as extension agent since May, 1942, having had charge of twenty counties. Prior to that time, he had served for fifteen years as Rockingham county agricultural agent. He was a graduate of V. P. I., Blacksburg, and was a veteran of World War I. The widow, who is the former Miss Ruth Spring, daughter of the late Rev. J. E. Spring, former Methodist pastor at Independence, and Mrs. Spring, survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Misses Jane and Martha Cox; two sons, Samuel M. Cox Jr., and Jack Cox; three brothers, Brig. Gen. Creed F. Cox, U.S. Army (retired), Independence, Kyle T. Cox, superintendent of Grayson county schools, Independence, and F. Mack Cox, Independence, and four sisters, Mrs. D. D. Cole, Chilhowie, Mrs. Glenn Thomas, Grant, Mrs. Boyd Etter, Rising Sun, Md., and Mrs. Rose Surratt, Union, S.C. The deceased was preceded in death, by a little less than a month previously, by another brother, Dan Cox, who died July 16. Funeral services were conducted this morning, at eleven o'clock, at the Timberville Church of the Brethren. Immediately following the services, the body was brought to Grayson county, and burial services were to be held at 6 p.m. today, at the cemetery at Saddle Creek Primitive Baptist church, near Independence.
