Samuel Nixon, who leaves the world better because he lived in it, died Tuesday night of this week at his home one mile east of Utica, aged 84 years, 10 months and 22 days. He had been in failing health for some time previous to his death. Mr. Nixon was born in Wayne county, Ohio, June 13, 1820, and on March 25, 1841, he married Rachel Webb, who survives with six children, viz., Jacob Nixon, Mrs. Emily J. Dunn, George Nixon, Moses, Alonzo and Julius G. Three children, Mrs. Maria Wherry, Mrs. Harriet Pratt and Miss Anna Nixon are dead. In the spring of 1848 Mr. and Mrs. Nixon came to Iowa and settled on the large farm near Utica which has since been their home. About 1873 Mr. Nixon served one term as county supervisor. Politically he was an ardent republican and was a devoted christian, his membership being in the Free Will Baptist church. He was firm in his convictions but loved to learn the right and do it. Everybody who knew Samuel Nixon recognized him as a man guided strictly by what his conscious told him was his christian duty. He had no use for the double dealer and though not obstrusive [sic] in his opinions, he never hesitated to express them where he thought best to do so. He will not only be missed in his family but the community where his home has been for the past fifty-seven years will greatly feel his loss. At this writing, Wednesday April 5, it is understood the funeral services, which will be in charge of Rev. Tibbets of Ft. Madison, will be held at 11 o'clock Friday, if those of the children of the deceased who reside in other states can get to the old home by that time. The burial will be in the Dibble cemetery about a mile southwest of the home.
