After having enjoyed married life for fifty years, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Plaisted, surrounded by their children and grandchildren, friends and relatives to the number of 200, observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the Plaisted home on West Main Street this afternoon and evening. The rooms of the house were decorated with hothouse flowers, ferns and potted plants while Mr. and Mrs. Plaisted received their friends standing under a large wedding bell. Many beautiful presents were presented the couple by their friends of whom there are many in this section. Refreshments were served. Samuel Plaisted was born in New Hampton in 1833 and in 1856 he married Miss Phebe Plaisted, also of New Hampton. They lived there for a long time and were recently burned out of their home and then moved to a home to a residence of one of them on East Main Street. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Plaisted, Celia, who married Stephen Eastman and who now lives in Chicago; Belle who married Willie Bowen and who lives in Lowell; Jennie, who married John Leavitt and who lives in Portsmouth; Annie, who married Henry Morse and who now lives here and Miss Carrie who resides with her parents here. There are also five grandchildren, Thomas Eastman, Bertie Bowen, Ralph Leavitt, Stephen and Avis Morse. Mr. Plaisted made farming his trade with the exception of a few years when he was in the brick business. He made what is called the Plaisted brick and finished these with which the local Free Will Church and vestry were built as well as several other buildings here. The Plaisted home this afternoon and evening was the scene of much activity. Many out of town guests were present including James Plaisted and family; Mr. and Mrs. Irville Prescott, Meredith; Mr. and Mrs. George Plaisted, Plymouth; Dr. and Mrs. J.F. Smith, Boston; Roy Plaisted, West Lynn; F. Whitten and Mrs. Abrams. Mrs. Bracket, Lynn; Mr. and Mrs. Colby Davis, Meredith; Mrs. George Morris, Jamaica Plain and Clara Smith, Boston. Samuel Plaisted, who for the past five years has been possessor of Ashland's Boston Post Gold Headed Cane, observed his 93rd Birthday Thursday. He spent the day with relatives in Alton Bay. Mr. Plaisted is the oldest resident of Ashland and the surrounding territory and says he will live to pass the century mark. Aside from being deaf, Mr. Plaisted is in the best of health and likes to converse on all the leading questions of the day. Everyone in town has a glad hand for him and he is always ready to talk with his many friends. He makes his home with his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy F. Hartwell on East Main Street. He was born in New Hampton in 1833 and in 1856 married Miss Phoebe Plaisted, also of New Hampton. Mr. and Mrs. Plaisted observed their 68th wedding just before Mrs. Plaisted died in 1924. Four children were born to them, Mrs Celia Warner of Ashland, Mrs. J.W. Brown of Warren, Mrs Henry Morse of Ashland who died in 1912, and Mrs R.F. Hartwell of Ashland, also there are six grandchildren. Samuel Plaisted, the oldest man in Ashland and in the vicinity, died Friday afternoon at the home of his daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hartwell, after only a few months of failing health. Mr. Plaisted was born in New Hampton, N.H., July 29, 1833, and would have been 94 years old next July. They lived in New Hampton until 22 years ago. His buildings were burned to the ground at the time he moved here. He was a retired farmer and brick-maker. Mr Plaisted is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Cella Warner of Ashland, Mrs. Belle Bowen of Lowell, and Mrs. Jennie Leavitt of Portsmouth and Mrs. Carrie Hartwell of Ashland. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, with Reverend A.N. Pierce officiating. The bearers were Frank Kelley, John Dow, Sam Smith and J.G. Smith, and burial was in Green Grove Cemetery. E.G. Gammons was undertaker in charge. Mr. Plaisted has been a familiar figure on the streets and has a host of friends who will miss him greatly.
