Description	:	Samuel Pool, Sr. was born to Johann (Juhann) Conrad Pul/Pool and Rachel Dowell (Dewell). Dowell was actually pronounced Dewell or Duel; many families did adopt the latter two spellings. This was common in the 1700-1800's, as families split away going to new parts of the US as we know it today. This was common in the 1700-1800's, as families split away going to new parts of the US as we know it today. Conrad Pool and Rachel Dowell (Dewell) came to Iowa in 1858 by steamboat down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River then to Keokuk and on to Pittsburg, Iowa on the Des Moines River. This was April, the month when most trips were started after the frost had left the ground. The settlers had to leave in April to make it to Oregon and other places west before the snow fell in the fall. This was providing everything went well which it hardly ever did. On one trip (probably 1851 when Samuel came) many, many Pool families and relatives from Washington Co., Ohio and other places left in a group on a wagon train to Keokuk, Iowa. They separated there, many going on through northern Missour, some staying in Missouri, Kansas and on west. The rest went up into Iowa vis Le and Van Buren Counties. Samuel Pool Sr. and Elizabeth Yant came to Iowa in 1851, Van Buren Co., Iowa by covered wagon with their children Benjamin, Rachel, Catherine, Ruth and Samuel Jr. They were not listed in the 1852 Iowa census so may have started for parts further west then returning to Van Buren Co. Rachel, the wife of Conrad was living in Leando, Iowa at the time of the 1870 census. Samuel Sr. had returned from Montana where he had been for approximately 5 1/2 years. Samuel Jr. went with him when a lad of 13-14 years old. Jacob, the brother of Samuel Sr. went also; whether he went at the same time is unknown but very possible. Jacob never returned to Iowa. Samuel Sr. and his brother Jacob started the first sawmill in the territory of Montana, Big Hole country, near Wisdom, Montana. This is high mountainous country where fifty (50) degrees below zero is not at all uncommon. Lived in a covered wagon at least part of the time, probably most. Indians were everywhere, this was their territory! One day the Indians came when Samuel Jr. was alone. He hid under the feather tick on the bed until they left; another time he jumped into the flour barrel. Samuel Sr. and Jacob along with young Samuel spent time in Virginia City, Montana as well as in Butte. Understand Samuel Jr. attended school a short while in Butte. Yet he could not read or write. He also attended school in Iowa before going west with his father. Samuel Sr. could read and write very well. Rachel was a good mother, insisting on education for her children in the early Ohio years. Samuel Jr. went west at least three more times; Grandma Ellen finally put her little foot down and said "no more going west, young man." The two of them did go west "agin" in the early 1900's to Montana where two daughters lived (Pony, Montana.) They went west on the train to Sheridan, Wyoming with a group of Pool family members. The rest went on west, probably to Oregon. Samuel and Ellen had to ride in a stage from Sheridan to Pony which was close to Virginia City, Mt. The other children of Samuel Sr. stayed in Iowa while he was in Montana; Ruth Ann and Catherine both married in 1866, as well as their Uncle Enoch (1st time.) His father Conrad apparently died as he was living in 1860 census but no in the 1870. Rachel was living and apparently held down the family household of Emanuel, Enoch, and young Conrad (III).
