The services were conducted by the local Odd Fellow lodge, with Mr. Peterson, Noble Grand, of Mason in charge. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. J. A. Longston. The pall bearers were L. L. Harn, Wallace Maguire, Thos. Pattison, L. McLaughlin, Joe Morton and Ed. Thompson. To honor the departed comrade, many Legion men were present at the service, The Legion furnished six honorary pall bearers. The Legion firing squad fired the final salute at the grave and taps was sounded. Interment was in the local Fraternal cemetery. With the passing of Sam Wood, only three members of Harrison Post No. 104 G.A.R. are left. They are Wm. Hollingsworth, W. P. Robison, and Curtis Rainier. John Varney is also a Civil War veteran who lives here but it is understood that he is no a member of this G. A. R. Post. Samuel Roland Wood was born Nov. 5 at New Castle, Penn. At the age of 14 he enlisted in the army during the early part of the Civil War. At the age of 16 he re-enlisted and remained a soldier till the end of the war. He ran away from home to enlist the first time against his father's wishes and he would not have been successful in his attempt had not his uncle, Col. Marcus Wood advised his father that it would be better to let Sam join the army, which he did as a drummer boy. Sam Wood was the youngest of four brothers who fought in the Civil War. His father was also in the war. One of his brothers, Chas. L. Wood, who died last July, was a member of the famous Eagle Regiment of the 8th Wisconsin. Most of Mr. Wood's four years in the service were under the command of Col. A. J. Smith. He was in engagements in Georgia and was at Appomattox at the time of Lee's surrender. Soon after the war, Mr. Wood went to West Branch, Iowa and there took up his trade of painting and paper hanging. He worked over the entire state. About 35 years ago he came to Seattle and for the next 5 years prospected in the Mt. Baker country. When Mr. Wood came to Chelan he first went up-lake where he did consideralble prospecting. He prospected for a number of years with H. C. Keeler. Mr. Wood always liked Chelan and never could get away from here for any length of time. During the 30 years that Mr. Wood resided here, he made a great number of friends. On June 19, 1920, Mr. Wood and Nellie J. Lottritz were married in Yakima. Mr. Wood had been both an Odd Fellow and a member of the G. A. R. for over 50 years. He joined the Odd Fellow lodge at Manawa, Wis. Washington Death Certificate Name Samuel R.
