Description	:	Samuel Tyler was born May 30, 1890 in DeWitt, Illinois, the son of Sanford M. and Elizabeth Baity Tyler. He died on Saturday morning, July 5, 1986 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 96. As a small child Samuel and his parents moved to Webster City and attended rural schools and graduated from Webster City High School. Read More	Samuel Tyler was born May 30, 1890 in DeWitt, Illinois, the son of Sanford M. and Elizabeth Baity Tyler. He died on Saturday morning, July 5, 1986 at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 96. As a small child Samuel and his parents moved to Webster City and attended rural schools and graduated from Webster City High School. He then enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated on August 25, 1916; the next day he was united in marriage to Emma Lou Shaler in Cedar Rapids. Together they moved to Chelsea where he was superintendent and taught for twenty four years. During that time he received his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Iowa in 1931. He also served as a Civilian Instructor for the Air Force for two years serving at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois, Lincoln, Nebraska and Amarillo, Texas. After he resigned from the Air Force duty, Sam and his wife moved to Baxter, Iowa and then to Liscomb, Iowa. On December 23, 1948 his wife Emma Lou passed away. Sam was the educational director at the Glenwood State School in Glenwood. Here he met and married Josephine Trailer on February 16, 1950. In 1957, they moved to Lucas where he was the school Superintendent. For a short time, he was the director of the Childrens Home in Cedar Rapids. They moved to Derby, Iowa in 1961, and Sam substituted in several schools in that area until his 80th birthday. In 1976 Sam and Josephine moved to the Salem Lutheran Retirement Home in Elk Horn. Josephine passed away in 1984. Sam has been in the Nursing Home branch for several years. Sam was a fifty year member of the Zenith Lodge at Riceville, Iowa; Life member of the National Education Association; the United Methodist Church at Derby. Sam's life touched and influenced many, many people. His caring concern and love for family, fiends, and students will continue to help those who cared for and returned his love. Survivors include, his children, Sanford Shaler Tyler of Chester, Iowa; Lois Winnifred Tyler of Casper, Wyoming and Dr. Warren Earl Tyler of Schleswig, Iowa. Eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. One brother, Ralph Tyler of Walnut Grove, Minnesota; one sister, Zella Olson of Cottonwood, Minnesota. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 8, 1986 at 10:00 A. M. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Burial was in the Rector Cemetery in Chelsea, Iowa. The Rev. J. H. Thomsen officiated at the services. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers were: Dale Ross, Lloyd Jenison and Vic Rogers. Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa.
