He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Grindle. He had five brothers and two sisters, he being the fifth child in order of age. Jacob, George, James, Susan, Samuel, John and Henry. His father died when he was seven years of age and his mother with the ad of the older children reared the family to manhood and womanhood. She died at her daughter’s at the age of 79 years. Father Grindle was married to Mary Miller, when 23 years of age, on January 21st, 1841, in Fairfield, Green county, Ohio. This union was blessed with ten children. Jacob, Caroline, John Q, Caristiana and Abraham were born in Ohio, and with their parents moved to Indiana, settling on August 13th, 1849, about on mile south-east of Mier, Grant county. Here the remainder of the family were born, whose names are Clarissa, Mary c., Paul P., Casper and an infant. At the age of 35 the companion of his youth died, the date of her death being Dec. 16th, 1855. Five of the children preceded him to the Spirit world. Father Grindle was again united in marriage to Mary A. West, on April 27th, 1856. To this union was born one daughter Margaret A. who died when eleven months old. Father Grindle united with the Reformed church while living in Ohio and was born of God when a young man, realizing what religion was, but as it is with many, when the cares, conflicts and hardships of the world came upon him that choked the good seed and he neglected his duty to God, and on coming to this then new and wild country, having to meet and endure all the hardships of pioneer life, he continued to neglect the renewal of his covenant to God until about 24 years ago under the pastorate of Rev. F. W. Boxwell, he united with the Methodist Protestant church of Mier. But not until about seven years ago did he receive his most wonderful blessing of is salvation and acceptance with God: this last and wonderful victory over self and sin was won by him under the preaching of Rev. F. E. Lancaster. After this time his life, Father Grindle, was an excellent example of faith in God and Christianity. In the later years of his life he and his bereft companion have enjoy many happy seasons of God’s grace at home and in the public congregation where they were found when able to attend. For more than four months prior to his death he was very sorely afflicted, but he rejoiced that he knew that there was a rest for the weary, and again and again thanked God that he was ready to go to that “rest that remaineth for the people of God.” He leaves the bereft companion, two brothers, one sister, the five remaining children, thirty grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends to mourn his absence. He funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J. L. Barclay on Sabbath morning, July 1st, 1894, to a larger audience of relative and friends, from the latter part of Eccl. 7-1. The remains were interred in the Thrailkill Cemetery, near Mier.
