Description	:	Samuel White McCorkle, Sr. was the son of Thomas E. McCorkle and Susan Mildred Alexander. He married Miss Lula Dunlap Strain, the daughter of D (David) E (Eldred) and M (Margaret Dunlap) Strain on 22 or 29 Oct 1878 in Brownsburg, Rockbridge Co., VA. A B McCorkle officiated. They had nine McCorkle children: Margaret, Susan Mildred, John Baxter, Eldred Strain, Morton McNutt, Samuel White, Jr., Thomas Alexander, Lee Vaughan and Lula Strain. Ten years later on the 1870 Buffalo, Rockbridge, Virginia census, I found farmer Thomas McCorkle, 66 with $15K in real estate; Susan McCorkle, 60; Margret E McCorkle, 22 and laborer SAMUEL W McCorkle, 19, all VA born. On the 1880 Buffalo, Rockbridge, Virginia census, I found (his mom) Susan A. McCorkle, 75; farmer and son SAMUEL W. McCorkle, 29; daughter in law Lulu D. McCorkle, 22; grand son born in Sept. William M. McCorkle, 8/12; granddaughter Susan A. McNutt, 17 and grandson William M. McNutt, 14, all Virginia born. On the 1900 Buffalo, Rockbridge, Virginia census, I found farmer SAMUEL W McCorkle, 48, Jul 1851; wife of 21 years Lula O McCorkle, 42, Jul 1857, had 9 kids, all living; sons or daughters: Maggie D McCorkle, 20, Sep 1879; Susan M McCorkle, 19, Apr 1881; John B McCorkle, 17, Nov 1882; Eldred S McCorkle, 15, Dec 1884; Morton Mcg McCorkle, 13, Apr 1887; Samuel W McCorkle, 11, Feb 1889; Thomas A McCorkle, 9, Oct 1890; Lee V McCorkle, 7, Oct 1892 Lula S McCorkle, 4, Jul 1895, all Virginia born. On his final census on the 1920 Buffalo, Rockbridge, Virginia on Buffalo Belington Road, I found farm owner SAMUEL McCorkle, 68; wife Lula McCorkle, 62; son Morton McCorkle, 32; daughter (in law) Nina P McCorkle, 26 and (grand) daughter Nancy P McCorkle, 1 6/12, all VA born. I found Samuel W. McCorkle's home on the W.P.A. Historical Inventory Survey in 1939. It's on the Library of Virginia site. It's in the Kerr's Creek District, 5 miles west of Lexington. It was build of brick in 1837 by Robert Wilson. His gravestone is located under a small tree, beside son Lee Vaughan McCorkle (#2) and one over from his brother, Lieut. John Baxter McCorkle (#1), plus wife Lula(#3), his parents Thomas and Susan (#4) and son Morton with his wife Nina (#6). Samuel White McCorkle, Sr. was born on 22 Jul 1851 in Rockbridge Co., VA, to parents Thomas McCorkle (born in Greenbrier Co., WV) and Susan Alexander (born in Rockbridge Co., VA). He was a farmer and the widower of Lula Strain McCorkle. On 30 Sep 1928, he died in Rockbridge Co., VA. VA Cert. of Death #21748. Bio by LSP
