Read More	Times-Republican Thursday February 17, 1910 [p. 1] Half Century Resident Dies Samuel Gant Passes Away At Home In Mason Township and Service Is Held At Siam Church Comrades Are Pall Bearers Native of England and Came To Taylor County In 1857---Service in Army Samuel Gant, who for fifty-two years was a resident of Mason Township, about four miles south of Siam, died Saturday at the age of 70 years. The funeral service was held in the Siam church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. William Cobb of Bedford and Rev. W. L. Dunlavy of Gravity. The ceremony at the grave was conducted by Siam Lodge A. F. and A. M., and the pallbearers were W. F. Evans, Milton Houck, F. E. Walker, William Wilkins, William Cobb and A. L. Cobb. The first five named were comrades of Mr. Gant in Company F, Twenty-Ninth Iowa Infantry. Samuel Gant was born Jan. 9, 1839 in Bodham, England, where he grew to manhood. He came to the United States in 1856, stopping for one year near Mineral Point, Wis. In 1857 he came to Taylor County, filing a pre-emption right on a tract of land in Mason Township, which has ever since been his home. He was married March 31, 1859, to Mrs. Mary A. [lmira Allen] Mapes, who died Nov. 1895. To this union were born ten children, four of whom died in the early age of life. Those left to mourn are Samuel W. [infred] Gant, Sarah Miller, David J. [asper] Gant, Charles N. [ewton] Gant, Anna Bix and Hattie Stewart. Mr. Gant united with the Church of Christ by a public confession of faith in Christ and obedience to the gospel in August 1859, and was baptized by Elder Samuel Downey of Harrison County, Missouri. He was an earnest Christian, a devoted and affectionate husband and father, being ever solicitous about the welfare of his family, both temporal and spiritual. He took much pride in the excellent family he had reared as he justly had reason to. When the dark clouds of war overspread this country in the '60's, he bade adieu to his little dependent family and home and on the ninth day of August 1862, volunteered his services to save the union of states and became a member of Company F, Twenty-ninth Iowa, and for three years shared the hardships, the fatigues, the scouts, the marches, and engagements of that regiment, being discharged with the company and regiment on the tenth day of August, 1865, at New Orleans. He was devotedly attached to his friends, and was seldom, if ever, known to turn his face away from the wants or necessities of his fellow beings who were struggling in the conflicts of life. His passion of love for his old comrades of the war was truly unselfish and undying. He was a member of Plumb lodge, A. F. and A. M., and prized these fraternal relations much. As a citizen he was honest, industrious and upright and filled well the measure of a public spirited, but careful and consistent member of every society in which he moved. His honest and earnest efforts in life were crowned with a much merited success. He leaves to the members of his family remaining behind the results of the labors of his life, and better still, a noble example of true manhood.
