Burial was in the Siam cemetery, with Plumb Masonic Lodge giving its ritualistic service at the grave. Charles Newton Gant, son of Samuel W. [infrid] and Mary Allen Mapes Gant, was born on a farm northeast of Siam, Iowa, and died at the age of 85 years, 11 months, 22 days. He obtained his education in the North Star country school near the place of his birth. On Jan. 8, 1898, he confessed his faith in Christ, was baptized and united with the Church of Christ in Siam where he remained a staunch member and faithful attendant with his family. On March 21, 1900, he was united in marriage to Florence Idell Goodrich of Taylor County. They established their home on a farm near where Mr. Gant was born and lived there until Mrs. Gant's death on Jan. 13, 1942. Mr. Gant continued to live alone on the farm as long as his health permitted. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. They are, an infant son, who died at birth; Mrs. Wilber Carmichael (Mabel) of McFall, Mo.; Russell Gant, who passed away May 26, 1936; Mrs. Laurence Allison (Mary) of Mentone, Calif.; Mrs. John Bix (Alma) of New Market; Orval Gant and Mrs. Ernest Gray (Ethel) of Bedford. Mr. Gant was a member of Plumb Lodge No. 285, A. F. & A. M. of Siam and a member of New Market Eastern Star chapter. He served Plumb Lodge as worshipful master in 1937. He was a faithful attendant of Blue Lodge and firmly believed in the teachings of the lodge. He followed the profession of farming all his life, never so happy as when working in the fields. He leaves to mourn his passing, one son, four daughters, two daughters-in-law, four sons-in-law, 20 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Bert Stewart (Hattie) of Hopkins. Mr. Gant was one of a family of 10 children, four of whom died in infancy; two brothers, Samuel and David Gant and two sisters, Mrs. George Bix (Anna) and Mrs. Fred Miller (Sarah) and his parents, all of whom preceded him in death.
