Description	:	Samuel Work Was born in Clark county, Indiana, September 30th, 1818, and died on the 27th day of April, 1907, at Birmingham, Iowa.(**Handwritten: 1908) His family is of Scottish origin. His father Judge Joseph Work settled in an early day in Clark county, Indainia(sp). Samuel Work in his early life was reared on a farm and had the privelege(sp) of the Common Schools of that state, afterwards attended the Clark county Seminary of Indiana. Read More	Samuel Work Was born in Clark county, Indiana, September 30th, 1818, and died on the 27th day of April, 1907, at Birmingham, Iowa.(**Handwritten: 1908) His family is of Scottish origin. His father Judge Joseph Work settled in an early day in Clark county, Indainia(sp). Samuel Work in his early life was reared on a farm and had the privelege(sp) of the Common Schools of that state, afterwards attended the Clark county Seminary of Indiana. In 1841 he with his father and brothers came to Iowa and bought land adjoining Birmingham. In 1842 he married Hannah Beggs, when he and his wife immediately started by the Ohio river boat route for their new home in the west. They were among the early settlers of this county and had to endure the hardships of the early pioneer life. Here they bought the farm of two hundred acres with its double log cabin and log barn, the regular improvements of that day. Here Mr. and Mrs. work have lived for 67 years. There has been born to Mr. and Mrs. Work eight sons and one daughter. John Work who enlisted as a soldier at his country's call in 1862 and died in 1865, George W. Work who died in 1894, in Indiana, J.Q. Work of Lamar, Mo., James M. Work, Samuel Work who died at Birmingham, June 15, 1897, Thos. J. Work, R.E. Work, Lincoln Work who died when a baby and Emma Work. The children with several grandchildren were at the old home to attend the funeral. By industry and economy practiced among the early settlers. Mr. Work laid the foundation for the prosperity and fortune which he has accumulated, making him one of the wealthy men of the county. Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Cummins and Rev. Behner. Interment at the Birmingham cemetery. Source: Van Buren Co.
