Irby, and a native of Brunswick County. She was born October 7, 1918, a daughter of the late Rufus Alexander Short and Laura Etta Steed Short. She attended Mary Washington College before her marriage February 14, 1942 to Richard Logan Irby, who became superintendent of VMI in 1971 following a distinguished 32-year Army career that saw him rise through three wars to the rank of major general. As an Army wife and as the... Read More	Anne Short Irby, of Lexington, died Thursday, February 10, 1994, at her home in Lexington. Wife of former Virginia Military Institute superintendent Lt. Gen. Richard L. Irby, and a native of Brunswick County. She was born October 7, 1918, a daughter of the late Rufus Alexander Short and Laura Etta Steed Short. She attended Mary Washington College before her marriage February 14, 1942 to Richard Logan Irby, who became superintendent of VMI in 1971 following a distinguished 32-year Army career that saw him rise through three wars to the rank of major general. As an Army wife and as the wife of VMI's superintendent, Mrs. Irby was awarm and gracious hostess who endeared herself to a host of their military and VMI colleagues. Her devotion to VMI was expressed in many ways over the years, most notably with a personally designed and handcrafted needlepoint bell pull for the superintendent's quarters at VMI. The bell pull incorporates numerous VMI scenes along with the names and dates of service of Institute superintendents. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Col. Richard L. Irby Jr. and his wife, Mary Ann, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.; William Steed Irby and his wife, Leslie, Statesboro, Ga.; a daughter, Debra Irby Mulligan and her husband, John, Front Royal; four granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Irby Stasky, Mary Katherine Irby, Erin McKenzie Irby, and Laura Anne Mulligan; and a great-grandson, Tyler Joseph Stasky. Funeral services conducted by VMI Chaplain Col. Charles C. Caudill will be held at VMI's Jackson Memorial Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 1994, with burial following a Stonewall Jackson Cemetery. Friends may call at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Rockbridge Area Hospice, P.O. Box 948, Lexington, Va. Arrangements are by Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.
