Sarah Brooks was born Sept. 30, 1843 at Ashaway, R.I. She was married to Sanford Saunders, December 1860 at Poquetonuck, Conn. Eleven years later the long journey to the "Far West" began. The railroad at that time extended to Sioux City and from that point the river route was taken to Running Water, S.D. A few months later the destination planned on leaving the old home was reached, Bazile Mills and the spot that will ever be associated with names of Brooks' and Saunders' families to this generation was established. Verily, the writer believes, the wildest stretch of imagination cannot conceive what it meant to this young mother to take up the tasks awaiting. The distance from the old home and loved ones of her youth,; the separation from those we ever hold in memory; long weary miles to be traveled 'ere supplies that wee so necessary could be procured; the possibility of sickness in the family and skilled help unavailable. There were great hopes for the future, that was the beacon light, which brought them to the new land and still led them on; but the fears those hearts must have known. Visualize, if you can and in so doing, we must give them place among those worthy of honor. History's pages hold no manes more worthy than the "Woman of Pioneers". The lean years that drouth and grasshoppers caused them to know, tested the temper of strong men and equally brave women. Into such an experience Mrs. Saunders came. Speaking one day of those early years, she said--"We had to bear them and make the best of it". Whatever hunger of heart there was for the comforts and conveniences of the New England home, here their stake had been set in Bazile Mills and here they would stay. Difficulties were to be met and conquered. Mrs. Saunders, with others like minded, as their little band increased, sought not only their material prosperity, but mental and spiritual needs must be met. To this end, a school and preaching services were established. On the list of the charter members of the first church organization in 1873, her name is written. Time and talent were willingly given. Precept and example was the rule of her life. To keep the village free from all influences that would blight the youth and degrade their elders was earnestly sought by her and her associates. The writer heard her say, "We knew what it was to lose, but we never knew what it was to give up". Such mothers of the sons and daughters of men are of God. This mother, ripe in years when the summons came, ever wise in council; strong in faith; kindly of heart, has gone on, leaving the best of her riches to her children and children's children, a good name. And the tribute those who hear her name, or have in their veins a drop of her blood is a life that seeks to emulate the splendid virtues she possessed. This is the only reward, she would covet--the name of Saunders unsullied. She leaves to mourn her loss, four sons, Henry F. and Chas. A., Creighton; Ben N., Norfolk and Geo. W., Center and one daughter, Mrs. W.W. Walton of Center, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The husband and one son preceded her in death. Amid the flowers she loved so well, the casket was placed for the last service at the Congregational church, December 8, every blossom a token of loving regard for the deceased and sympathy for the family.
