Henry F. Saunders, Former Mayor Here, is Buried Tuesday Henry F. Saunders, mayor of Creighton for more than 22 years, died at his home in Lincoln Sunday morning at the age of 86 years. Henry F. Saunders, Former Mayor Here, is Buried Tuesday Henry F. Saunders, mayor of Creighton for more than 22 years, died at his home in Lincoln Sunday morning at the age of 86 years. He and his wife had made their home in Lincoln since 1944, when his health became bad. Mr. Saunders came to Creighton from Bazile Mills about 1911. He was first elected to the office of mayor in April 1922 and was continuously reelected for many terms. He resigned the office in October, 1944, when failing health made it impossible to carry on his duties. He had been elected for his 12th term that spring. Prior to becoming mayor he served on the board of education for two terms. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Creighton Methodist church with the Rev. H.F. Beebe in charge. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. Creighton business places closed during the services. Pallbearers were R.L. Rice, Wid L. Turner, Wm. Rayer, W.W. Fickling, Dr. F.F. Theisen and Charles Hoferer. Henry R. Saunders was born in Poquetanock, Conn. Sept. 17, 1862. In 1872, when he was 10 years old, he accompanied his parents to Knox county, when they homesteaded here. With other members of the family, the Saunders founded Bazile Mills, where they were engaged in flour milling. As a young man, Henry learned the milling trade and soon became head miller of the Bazile Mills, a position he held for 30 years. His first wife, Ida Skeen, died in 1911. Following her death, Mr. Saunders and his children, Sanford W. and Sarah moved to Creighton, where he took an active interest in civic enterprises. He married Antoinette Markitan in 1913. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette of Lincoln, daughter, Mrs. Ernest Stochl of Creighton; son, Sanford W. Saunders of Lincoln; sister, Mrs. Clara L. Walton of Cincinnati, O.; three brothers, George W. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Charles A. of Plattsmouth and Benjamin F. of Crofton and two grandchildren. Sarah should be listed as Ethel. Henry's obit says they were married in 1913 & Antoinette's says 1914. Wedding announcement found. They were married Nov. 1914.
