The passing of this pioneer makes another gap in the ranks of the men and women who laid the foundations of this favored spot, so many of you call home. The debt we owe in their labors is not small and to me there is only one way for us to meet this great obligation-- by carrying on in the same spirit and purpose that possessed them. Sanford N. Saunders was born in Westerley, Washington County, R.I. May 14, 1837, the son of William and Lydia Saunders. Early in life he was left fatherless and as was often the custom in those days, he was bound out; passing thru the experiences usual with such conditions. He became a mill operative working as a spinner, for some years, later a truck farmer in the state of Conn. He was married to Sarah Brooks, Dec 1860, at Poquetonuck, Conn. Believing that larger opportunities for advancement were to be found in the west, with his wife and four children he journeyed to the new state of Nebraska, arriving Oct. 1871 and the spring of 1872 found them located at Bazile Mills. Here his days were spent in active service associated with his brother, William, and his brother-in-law, Samuel Brooks, later Mr. George Brooks came into the firm. One need not speak here of the tasks performed by these men to that community, nor the labor involved, to build and maintain the mill and other activities in which they were engaged. When the Bazile Bank was organized, he became its vice-president, which office he held until death. This is well known to all who recall anything of the early days of this community. Only by patient continuance in well-doing, did these rugged pioneers overcome the difficulties that beset them, whereby they were able to enjoy the fruits of their labor in after days. The burden of years beginning to fall heavily upon him, he disposed of the mill about 20 years ago, and in the fall of 1919, with his good wife, who kept step with him for sixty-three years, he came to Creighton, where he passed away after a few months of illness, Sunday evening at 6:30. Mr. Saunders was the last of his generation. Four sons, Henry, George, Chas., Ben and one daughter, Mrs. W.W. Walton with the wife and mother, mourn his loss. There are eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One son, Irwin preceded him in 1919. In his youth Mr. Saunders was baptised in the Seventh Day Baptist Church, but later conscientious objections to the keeping of the of the Seventh Day Sabbath caused him to refuse to fellowship with that body. He affiliated with the Congregational Church, the first organization effected in this part of the country. His work is done and like well ripened grain, he has been garnered, but his memory will be held dear to those who knew him as husband, father and friend. The funeral was held on Tuesday at 11 o'clock from the Congregational church in charge of Rev. DeBenham of Spencer, who preached a sermon in which he paid high tribute to the deceased. The services were conducted at the grave by the Masonic lodge of Creighton of which he was a member. A large concourse of friends were present at the obsequies and the floral offerings were extensive. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Creighton cemetery.
