Had Mrs. Barlean lived until March 24 she would have been 70 years old. Mrs. Barlean was first taken ill with pleurisy. She was not thought to be dangerously ill. Just at the time when she seemed well on the way to recovery, when relatives and friends were much encouraged as to her condition, she was stricken with paralysis which affected her throat. She suffered the stroke Tuesday, March 10, and the next Monday morning, at 10 o’clock, she passed on. Although Mrs. Barlean’s home was in David City, where she had lived for the past seven years, for several months she had been with her daughter, Mrs. Ella McLaughlin, residing on the Barlean farm six miles southwest of David city. Upon the return of her son, George Barlean, from Montana, coming to reside with his sister, Mrs. McLaughlin, upon the old home place, Mrs. Barlean had planned to return to her home in David City. Samuel Barlean, husband of Mrs. Barlean, passed on in June 1904. Mrs. Barlean is survived by eight children, 40 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, four sisters and two brothers. The children are George and James Barlean, Mrs. Ella McLaughlin and Mrs. John From, living near David City, Mrs. George McLaughlin of Cherryvale, Kansas, Mrs. John Pinney of Jelle, Minnesota, Mrs. Cole Raitt of Plankington, South Dakota, and Mrs. John Edwards of Douglas, Wyoming. The four sisters live in Iowa and the homes of the brothers, George and Charles Cecil, are in Haigler, Nebraska and Plankington, South Dakota respectively. Sarah Ellen Cecil was Mrs. Barlean’s maiden name. She was born March 24, 1850, in Indiana and at an early age moved with her parents to Iowa, they settling near Creston. On June 7, 1868, she was married to Mr. Barlean. When the oldest child, Cara, now Mrs. George Mclaughlin, was three years of age, Mr. and Mrs. Barlean came to Nebraska and took homestead land in Butler County. Both Mr. and Mrs. Barlean passed away at the old home place. Mrs. Barlean had been a resident of Butler County 37 years. Mrs. Barlean possessed many splendid qualities. She was neighborly, motherly and kind-spirited. In the society of her children, when they were still at home, she held the larger place. In the earlier days, when hospitality was a necessity, she learned to exercise it generously and graciously, Her door was always open to all comers. She was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home place, southwest of David City, with Rev. J.M. Bothwell of the Methodist church officiating. A quartet, Mrs. E.G. Hall, Mrs. Loran Jordan, Dr. R. E. Sturdevant and W.S. Rosenstock, sang “One Sweetly Solemn Thought,” “Come Unto Me” and “I’m Going Home.” The pallbearers were John and David Curry, Clinton Gross, H.M. and J. D. Nichols and J. G. Lichliter.
