December 24, 1933 ________________________________________________________________________ Grand Mound, Ia., Oct 23. -- On last Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Sarah A. Dutton at her home southwest of town after a lingering illness with liver trouble and complications. Although she had been ill for many weeks and her death was expected, it came as a shock to her many relatives and friends. Mrs. Dutton was born Nov. 13, 1838, in Rockingham county, Virginia, being at the time of her death 75 years, 11 months, 25 days of age. She came to Clinton county, Iowa with her parents in 1851 and on Dec. 1, 1886, she was united in marriage to Lorenzo D. Dutton, who preceded her in death March 13, 1895. Ten children were born to them, of whom eight survive. They are C. A. Dutton of Hartley, Ia., Mrs. Viola Mellon of Santa Cruz, Cal., Mrs. R. D. Allison, Orpha, Nannie and Orsini Dutton all of near Grand Mound, and Mrs. Buel King of Dixon, Ia., and Mrs. Earl Scaggs on the old homestead where Mrs. Dutton had spent her entire married life. Three brothers and three sisters also survive, Robert and David Allison of Oregon, George of this place, Mrs. Isaac Thomas, Mrs. Susan Davis and Mrs. Justin Churchill all of Coon Rapids, Ia., besides eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. All of her children were with her during her long illness and at the time of her death. The deceased was one of the pioneer settlers of Clinton county and was one of the most highly esteemed ladies of the vicinity. She was a kind, loving wife and mother, charitable neighbor and friend who had endeared herself to a numberless host of relatives and friends who will miss her. The funeral was directed by Undertaker J. W. Kelly, services being conducted at the house by Rev. J. J. Kidder, M.E. pastor of DeWitt. Mrs. William Saltmarsh and Mrs. Fred Mitchell of DeWitt rendered two beautiful vocal duets at the grave in Evergreen cemetery where the remains were laid to rest. The funeral was largely attended by friends from DeWitt, Dixon, Wheatland and Grand Mound who came to pay their last respects to one so dearly loved and who will be so sadly missed. The entire community extends heartfelt sympathy to those who are left so saddened by the Angel of death. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse. The pall bearers were Henry Moeller, A. A. Barber, Edwin Miller, Hubert Green, G. W. Barber and Jacob Green, all old friends and former neighbors. (Clinton Daily Advertiser (Clinton , IA), Friday, Oct. 23, 1914, page 10, column 4.)
