JAMES HILLIS: A life long resident of East Garafraxa township, and village of Grand Valley, in the person of the late Mrs. James Hillis, passed away at her home on Amaranth Street, on Dec. 15, 1922, in her eighty-first year. She was born on January 22, 1872, a daughter of the late John Taylor and Sarah Jane Nelson and was married on March 18, 1891, to James Hillis, who predeceased her six years ago. She is survived by four sons and two daughters: Sarah (Mrs. Alfred Platt), Hirum, T.H., Elmer, Lillie (Mrs. Granger), and Carman; one brother, John H. Taylor; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and many other relatives. A private funeral service was held at the home at one o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 17th, by Elder Arthur Dunn. A double public service for hr and her sister-in-law, Mrs. John H. Taylor (who preceded her in death by only sixteen hours), was held in the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church, at two o'clock, her pastor, R. J. Farthing, officiating, assisted by Arthur Dunn, pastor at Elora. The scripture reading was Proverbs 31:10-31, and the message of comfort and hope was from the Revelation 14:13, "They rest from their labors and their works do follow them." A married ladies choir sang, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and Miss Shirley Turner, sang, "When I Come to the End of the Road." The pianist was Mrs. V. L. Hodgson. The pallbearers were Hiram, T. H., Elmer and Carman, son of the deceased, Alfred Platt, son-in-law, and Harry Hillis, a nephew-in-law. The flowers were carried by the grandchildren and others. Friends were present from Alliston, Toronto, Port Credit, Dundalk, Fergus, Humber Bay, Orangeville and Guelph. Interment was in Grand Valley Union Cemetery. Contributor: Betty (48321843)
