Spangle, the son of Henry Spangle, on 24 July 1869 in Steuben County, Indiana. Lafayette was born around the year 1844 in Ohio and had served in the Union forces in the Civil War in the 29th Regt. Indiana Volunteer Infantry. In 1870 Sarah Margaret and Lafayette were living in Otsego Township in Steuben County. Sarah Margaret died in Steuben County on 18 November 1872, only a week after the birth of her daughter, Belle. She was buried in the Hamilton Cemetery in Otsego Township, Steuben Co., Indiana. Her tombstone states that she was the "Mother of Frankie J. and ‘Little Bell'."
