Selma Katherine Marie was born to Grover and Selma (Backstrom) Carr on February 20, 1918 at Wakefield, Nebraska. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in April of 1918 and confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church at Wakefield, Nebraska in June of 1933. She attended the Wakefield Public Schools and graduated from Wakefield High School in May 1936. After graduation, she clerked in the local variety store for several years. Selma Katherine Marie was born to Grover and Selma (Backstrom) Carr on February 20, 1918 at Wakefield, Nebraska. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith in April of 1918 and confirmed in Salem Lutheran Church at Wakefield, Nebraska in June of 1933. She attended the Wakefield Public Schools and graduated from Wakefield High School in May 1936. After graduation, she clerked in the local variety store for several years. She married Kenneth Wenstrand on December 29, 1939. They moved onto his farm in the spring of 1940 and farmed there for 20 years. Ken and Marie had two children, Terry and Laurene. Marie was an active member of the women's groups in the church and also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She also was a member of her neighborhood club, The Home Circle Club. In 1960, Ken and Marie purchased and began operating Hunters Bay Lodge on Woman Lake, south of Longville, Minnesota. They spent the next 19 years operating the resort where they made many lifelong friendships. They retired in 1979, when they built a retirement home on the south shore of Woman Lake. Marie served on the church council of Salem Lutheran Church at Longville and was treasurer of the Ruth Circle for many years. She also served as treasurer of the ELCA Women for eight years. After she retired, she served as treasurer of the Wabedo Township for ten years. Marie had a life-long passion for learning and early in life made a goal to master a new skill every decade of her life. She learned cooking/baking, sewing, embroidery, crocheting, knitting, and quilting. When she reach her 70's she wanted to learn how to play the violin but had too much arthritis in her hands, so instead she learned American Sign Language. She loved to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief and knit baby caps and bandages for Global Missions. There are hundreds of friend's and relative's babies who have received her hand-made baby caps, sweaters, and afghans. Survivors are a son Terry and his wife Gloria of Santa Clara, Utah, a daughter, Laurene of Plymouth, Minnesota, two grandsons, Mike of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Craig and his wife Tara of Baxter, Minnesota, three great grandchildren, Brian, C. J., and Serra, a sister-in-law Caroline Carr of Lyons, Nebraska, three nieces, three nephews, cousins, and a host of dear friends. Marie was preceded in death by Ken, her husband of 67 years, parents, Grover and Selma Carr, sister, Marion Felt, and brother, Clinton Carr.
