Description	:	Serring P. Hoover was born near where he is buried. He was the son of Lewis Hoover and Catharine Fleming (per both marriage and death certificates). An older brother, Israel Hoover (1828-1844) is buried nearby at the Fairmount Presbyterian Churchyard next to their mother. Lewis, Catharine, and Serring (then Cyprian P.) are listed in the 1850 Census living with William and Anna Apgar in Washington Twp., Morris County which is just down the road from this Hunterdon County cemetery. Anna was his half-sister. He lived his adult life in Tewksbury, near New Germantown P.O. I have not yet found any information about Lewis Hoover's family and little about him. He was born c. 1800 in either Fox Hill/Fairmount, NJ (one death record) or Hurdtown, Morris County (another death record). Hurdtown is about 20 miles away. Both agree that he died in August 1877 in Washington Twp., Morris Co., but disagree on the day citing both the 14th and the 16th. I expect that he died on the 14th in Morris County and they issued a death certificate and that the family brought him back to Hunterdon, and another death certificate was issued. He is likely buried in Fairmount Churchyard or Fairmount Cemetery. He is in the 1850 with his wife and son, living with Anna Apgar, one of his wife's married daughters, in Washington Twp, Morris County. He is in the 1860 Censuses in Washington Twp with another of her daughters, Catherine Ader, and listed as a "pauper." In 1870 he is again with Anna Apgar. His name is garbled as "Osaac Hoafler" in the Ancestry index, but looks like "Isaac Hoofler" in the original. He was born in 1800 and was then blind and with "no occupation." Lewis is likely in the 1840 Census in Washington Twp with his land-owning first wife Catherine Beam as the head of household and with their two sons, Israel and Serring. She inherited land from her father William Fleming and maybe have inherited from her first husband. Catharine Fleming Beam Hoover (1791-1853) was the daughter of William Fleming (1766-1838) and Anna Philhower and the widow of Morris Beam (1787-c.1825). Morris died later than 1822 as was listed in "Early Germans of New Jersey" if Ebenezer b.1825 was in fact a son of Morris and Catherine as the book claims. Her first Hoover child was born in 1829. She is buried in the Fairmount Presbyterian Churchyard as Catharine Beam. I do not know the reason for this aside from it being the decision of her Beam children but seems seems to have maintained the Beam name in some circumstances, the 1840 Census and an 1843 deed. She married Lewis Hoover after the c.1825 death of her first husband and before 1829 and had at least two more children--Israel and Serring. In the 1850 Census, the three Hoovers are living in the household of William Apgar and Anna Fleming Beam Apgar. Anna was a daughter of Catharine Beam Hoover. In the 1860 and 1870 Censuses, Serring Hoover, his wife, and children were living in the household of Ebenezer Beam. Ebenezer was a son of Catharine Beam Hoover. There were many Beam households around them. Serring married Margaret L. Gray, daughter of Oliver Gray who seems to have been an 1832 Scots immigrant and Mary Ann Lutes, on 8 Dec 1853 in Tewksbury. He is listed as being from Morris County and she from Fox Hill/Fairmount. His parents are given as Lewis and Catharine. They had 14 children, 11 of whom were living in 1900: Sarah, Mathias, Andrew who died young, Anna Jane, Mary Ann, Ebenezer, George, Cornelius, Eliza D. (my great-grandmother), James, Emma F., Wilhemina, plus two still-born infants. Toddler Andrew Hoover is buried near his grandmother Catherine. On his death certificate his parents are listed as Lewis Hoover and Catherine Fleming.
