He had three brothers, Raymond, Lester and Harley and three sisters, Evelyn, Mavis, and Joyce. He attended a rural country school, but did not go to high school. He and his brother Lester were great pals as they hunted and trapped together. Ervin helped his dad on the farm and was good working with the horses. He helped area farmers with fieldwork. In fact on the day he was to leave Aberdeen for Fort Snelling, he helped with the harvest. Ervin was drafted and on October 16, 1942 reported to Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He was also at Fort Ord in Oregon and Fort Lewis in Washington. He was trained as a machine gunner. From Fort Lewis, he was sent overseas and served in the Philippines and Okinawa. He went up in rank from PVT, then PFC, up to Sergeant and, finally Staff Sergeant. He was part of Company C of the 383rd Infantry of the 96th Division of the U.S. Army. Jan 19, 1945- Dear Mother: Just a few lines to let you know that I am fine and hope this finds you the same. It has been raining here all morning and it doesn't look like it is going to clear up for a few days. I'll bet you could use a little rain there about now couldn't you. I received the letter you wrote the second of Jan. the day before yesterday, and yesterday I got the one dad wrote Nov. 24th so you can see how our mail is messed up. We should get our back mail cleaned up pretty quick... Ervin was killed on the Ryukyu Retto Islands on Okinawa on April 9, 1945. Ervin gave his life for his country, fighting against the enemy in the front lines. Another soldier had been shot and Ervin crawled out to bring him back. He was killed, trying to save another life. He was originally interred on Okinawa Island, but the remains were brought back home in 1948 and buried in the Warner Cemetery. Ervin was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal.
