Glenn Milton “Squeek” Brooke was born in Chico, California, on December 5th of 1920. Glenn grew up in Chico with his older sister Winifred and attended the schools there, and finished just one year at Chico High. The family being raised through the Great Depression became dirt poor, Glenn’s father Emery worked his farm everyday where he raised pigs and chickens. To bring in more money young Glenn joined Chico’s unit of the California National Guard, Company G of the 184th Infantry Regiment in very early 1939. In early August of 1940 with 76 young men in the Company, Pfc. Glenn M. Brooke attended the 4th Army/CNG Maneuvers that were held in Grand Mound, Washington, at that time Glenn was promoted to Corporal. On March 3rd of 1941 the California National Guard was mobilized, ninety enlisted men and five officers of Company G of the 184th Infantry Regiment CNG were inducted into full time Federal Service, and sent by train to Camp San Luis Obispo for basic training, and was part of the 40th Infantry (Sunshine) Division. Glenn stayed with Company G for over six years, from the beginning of his military career to the end. He served through the remainder of 1941 and was sent to the San Diego area when the war broke out, and patrolled the west coast to the Mexican Border in the event of a Japanese attack. Glenn followed the Company in early 1942 from San Francisco to Fort Lewis, Washington, then back to San Francisco in June where they would be temporarily stationed at Fort Funston and the Presidio. In April of that year he married his grammar school sweetheart Thelma Darling Murphy, who he nicknamed “Spud”. In mid-July he participated in the Mt. Shasta Railway Patrol, guarding the bridges and tunnels from sabotage along the north-south Railway System from Dunsmuir to Redding California. At that time Glenn and Thelma moved into a small cabin just north of Dunsmuir. In early November the Company was sent back to San Francisco, in very late November the 184th Infantry Regiment was attached to the Seventh Infantry Division, and Company G was sent to Fort Ord in Salinas, California, where they would be stationed through the end of that year, and the first six months into 1943. From late 1942 through mid-1943 the Company spent a lot of its time on the beaches of Monterey, California, where they trained in amphibious boat landings, at that time Corporal Brooke was promoted to Staff Sergeant, and the couple moved into a small house on the beach in the little town of Seaside, California. Sgt. Brooke stayed with the Company and departed on the APA Joshua Whitney out of San Francisco for the Aleutian Islands on July 11th, with the landing on the island of Kiska in August of 1943. At that time when Glenn went overseas Thelma moved to Richmond, California, where she worked at a Naval Shipyard making parts for the Navy. The Japanese had abandoned the island of Kiska, leaving nothing but Booby-traps behind, within weeks the 184th departed the Aleutians on September 5th, and with a drastic change in temperature arrived in the Hawaiian Islands on September 26th where they would be stationed on Oahu. The men had spent the rest of the year training in amphibious boat landings and jungle warfare on the islands of Oahu and Maui. Glenn stayed with Company G through the Marshall Islands Campaign, with the landing on the island of Kwajalein on February 1st of 1944. The battle had lasted only four days, but on the evening of D+3 the Company found themselves surrounded, and fought off a Japanese “Banzai” charge with very little ammunition that lasted throughout the night and into the next morning, killing many, along with their beloved 1st Sergeant Earl L. Watson. The Regiment departed Kwajalein on February 7th for more training in Hawaii, at that time Glenn was promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant. On September 15th the Seventh Division left Hawaii for the Philippines, and the landing on the island of Leyte on October 20th of 1944. This was the largest military campaign in the Pacific up to this point, with over 200,000 troops, and General Douglas MacArthur’s famous “Return to the Philippines”. Company G had fought through the long jungle battle at Leyte, and boarded troop transports in late March for the Okinawa invasion on April 1st of 1945. Glenn made the landing with his Company of nearly 200 men on that Easter Sunday, their first objective was the capture of Kadena airstrip. For the Seventh the initial landing was virtually unopposed, but as the days went by all hell broke loose. The 184th would run into a wall of Japanese mortar and machine gun fire, but the Company continued its fight through battles to take Castle Hill on the 4th and 5th, Red Hill on the 7th, Triangulation Hill on the 8th, Tomb Hill on the 9th through the 13th, Skyline Ridge and Ouki Hill 19th through the 22nd and by the eve of the 23rd the Company was in a desperate fight at the base of Hill 178. By this point the Company had lost all of its officers, and was down to just 16 front line Riflemen, before the 17th Infantry Regiment relieved them on the morning of the 24th. The Company would spend one week in reserve, being re-supplied with approximately 65 new men that were just off the boat, 18 years old, and as green as a blade of grass. With some of the remaining veterans returning that were on the wounded list, the Company was put right back out on the front lines on May 1st. Within the coming four weeks the Company would lose over seventy percent of its men in casualties, twenty two wounded and five killed in just one day. Towards the end of May the Companies 1st Sergeant John W. “Jack” Hogan would become severely wounded, having been shot twice though the lungs, and evacuated off the island. By orders of 1st Lt. Homer C. Graff, the new Commanding Officer of G Company, Tech Sgt. Glenn M. Brooke would become the Companies new 1st Sergeant. The battle raged on for another three weeks, but on June 21st the island of Okinawa had been declared secure, and the last and most vicious battle of World War II was over. Company G had a 124 percent casualty rate, and lost 11 officers through the 83 day battle. There was just a half dozen original “Chico Boys” that were still in Company G that actually walked away from that battle on Okinawa, 1st Sergeant Glenn M. Brooke was one of them. On September 9th 1st Sgt. Brooke departed the island of Okinawa for the United States, arriving home two weeks later and being discharged from the Army on October 1st of 1945. Through the war years Glenn was wounded three times, once on the island of Leyte, and twice on Okinawa, the later by a hand grenade that went off near his face. He received the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and four Overseas Service Bars. After the war Glenn returned home to Chico, where he went to work for “Mothers Cookies” and the “Sunbeam Bread Company”. In 1957 he moved to Sacramento, California, and started driving a transport truck for the “Blue Seal Bread Company”. In late July of 1967 he moved to the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, where he lived in Lafayette, California, and drove a transport truck for “Weber’s Bread Company” in Oakland. In 1969 after the “Weber’s” plant was closed, he drove down the street and got a transport driving job at “Colombo French Bread”, also in Oakland. In October of 1970 Glenn and Thelma moved to Livermore, California, he stayed working at “Colombo French Bread” until 1980 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he retired from the bread business at that time. In late November of 1982 Glenn became paralyzed from the waist down after being diagnosed with spinal cancer, moving back to Chico in 1983 he suffered with the disease for nearly nine years. Glenn passed away in his hometown of Chico on his Wife’s Seventieth Birthday on October 8th of 1991. In just six months Glenn and Thelma would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Glenn worked hard all of his life and only had a couple of good years of retirement before he became paralyzed. His passion as a young man was camping, fishing, flying and auto racing, he was a huge Indianapolis 500 fan and attended four races at Indy, meeting famous race drivers like Louis Meyer and Parnelli Jones. In 1980 he became part of a motorcycle club, attended meetings and cross-country rides. He loved to spend time fishing with his kids and grandchildren, even when he was in a wheelchair he built large RC airplanes, and belonged to a club in Chico and flew them himself. In the last four years of his life he became a “born again Christian”, and I think this was the recipe he needed to keep his life going until the day he passed without pain. – Biography written by Scott Brooke, son of Glenn Milton Brooke.
