Storch, of Company B, Killed in a Battle near Quingua - ...Tuesday forenoon a telegram was received from Assistant Secretary of War Meiklejohn conveying the sorrowful news to the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Storch of the death of their son, James F. Storch, who was among the slain in Sunday's battle. Word was sent to Washington asking that the body be sent home as soon as possible.... James F. Storch, of Company B, First Nebraska U. S. Volunteers, was born in Putnam County Ohio, October 1, 1869 and was nearly thirty years of age. His parents moved to Nodaway county, Mo., in March 1870 and in 1887 to Fullerton, where the family has since resided. His first years in Nance county were spent on the farm assisting his father in farming and stock raising. In 1890 he graduated from the Grand Island Business College. Having a desire to see some of the world, he went to Seattle, Wash., early in 1891, visiting the British possession and the majority of the western states, returning to Fullerton in November of the same year. He was one of the founders of Company B, N. N. G., and enlisted December 10, 1891, was promoted to 3rd sergeant in 1894 and in March, 1896 to 2nd lieutenant, which position he held until his second trip to the Pacific coast in February, 1897. In the spring of 1893 he engaged in the hardware business with E. S. Bailey. He applied himself to this business for three years, after which he made a trip south in company with E. J. Dodd, as far as New Orleans, returning from there to Colorado, where he remained until 1896, when he returned to Fullerton. In February, 1897, he again visited the Pacific coast, spending the summer in the mining industry near Yesler, Washington, and in January of 1898, started on a trip to the Klondike. By means of a sled his outfit was transported from Dyea over the Chilcoot pass, across Lake Linderman to Lake Bennett, and was preparing to "chute" the White Horse Rapids when he learned that war had been declared with Spain. He immediately sold his outfit and took passage to Seattle and thence to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he enlisted in his old company. He was given the position of quartermaster sergeant, which position he filled faithfully until he fell in battle April 23, 1899. At the age of 16 he was converted and is a member of the M. E. church at Fullerton and leaves a father, mother, four brothers, three of whom are in Manila, four sisters besides a large circle of friends to mourn his death.... ---------------------------- From a 1903 Nance County, Nebraska, newspaper clipping file, transcribed by Linda Berney: The Omaha Daily News of Monday has this to say about Sergeant Storch who fell while in action for his country in the Philippine Islands: "Lieutenant Andy S. Wadsworth of Beatrice, formerly of the First Nebraska Volunteers, is a guest at the Iler Grand. Lieutenant Wadsworth was twice severely wounded at the battle of Quinge, Philippine Islands in April 1899. While lying wounded upon the field, Sergeant Storch, of the First Nebraska, went to his assistance and was shot, his body falling across Wadsworth. Wadsworth was in the hospital a number of months at San Francisco and still suffers from his wounds."
